Is it meds or illness??

Posted by B2chica on May 25, 2018, at 15:53:09

I ve been on desipramine for several weeks. Startup was great, feeling good ( like unmedicated good). But a week or so stated mood downhill slowly. Monday he upped desipramine from 50mg to 75mg. I am crying off and on, at times dont want to move, other times i have really high anxiety, and energy, more like Strong Impulivity.
It scares me.
Is there a way to tell if
-going up on the med is making me worse
-or if its just not working, and it needs to be upped?

Please assist if csn.

hi. i cannot really answer that for you, sadly. what else are you on?

the thing about my limited experience w/ tca drugs...

for me, they were/are more effective, more quickly, than the more modern drugs, especially when combined with an amphetamine (Adderall, in my case). However, I also had some anger and hostility and general...

activation, I suppose. Not over-stimulation per se, but not good stuff along with the (much needed) mood elevation.

its worth noting that back in the day, doctors would only give the people on tca drugs very small quantities at a time until they were fairly well along in treatment. this was because of the increased risk of suicide early on during treatment.

oh, and...if you have bipolar, especially type I or something in Schizoaffective land, tca drugs might be a bit too much. from what little i understand of the available data, the tca drugs are associated with more frequent+severe switching into (Hypo)mania than most more modern antidepressants (although I think Effexor is pretty bad, too).

wish I could be more helpful. can you tolerate neuroleptics/tranquilizers? Not long term, but maybe just short term, to help you simmer down a bit. Just a thought...

Are you only taking desipramine?

Imipramine might have a more 'balanced' effect (i.e. on NE / SERT).

The more noradrenergic meds don't agree with everybody.

Ultimately, I needed to quit nortriptyline. It was helping depression (to some extent) but worsening insomnia and giving cardiac side effects.

You might stick it out a bit longer, if you can. Otherwise, speak to your doctor.

It's sounds more like the underlying illness itself, not the med. The illness has made you sensitive to the med, so it appears like it is the med. But it's actually the underlying problem.

I was sensitive to all the psych meds. I later found out that is a common trait of Lyme patients. I'll never know. So many mysteries.
