going off luvox-help

Posted by joe f on May 11, 2018, at 15:34:30

going off of 200mg of luvox stopped working and don't want to go any higher....dr says to drop it to 150 first for 2 weeks....is that too fast? or should I go to 175 first? ALSO what other ssri would be the smoothest transition from luvox...was thinking viibryd/Lexapro? thoughts?

Joe are you depressed? I've been trying to eliminate all SSRI's so now down to 12.5mg a day of luvox and 2.5mg of lexapro. I notice nothing from either. Phillipa

The difficulty of transition varies a lot from person to person. Some people can wean off of meds fast but others need to go slow and cautious. Me, I had to go really slow. If I were in your shoes, I would have done maybe 175mg for a week and then maybe 150mg for a week and then reevaluate at that point. Maybe wouldn't even make it that far. Maybe it had to be 190mg first.

I think what matters is that you do not have a preset schedule but that you wing it and customize it on the fly, depending on it is going. For example if you discover you are weaning smoothly without any problems then you can probably get more aggressive. Or vice verse.

My hardest withdrawal required me to reduce doses in tiny steps, slowly, and several times during the journey I had to either go back up to the previous higher dose for a bit, or stabilize at a current dose before going any lower. Just flow with it. Don't push it.

As for a replacement, it depends on how good Luvox worked. I mean, if it was great, then ok maybe another might be too. But if it never was great, then another probably won't be either. These meds are more similar than different.

I always recommend Prozac because I think it is the best of the bunch. The others are me-too copycats that are not as good as the original. Clinical studies give the false impression that all of them are basically equally effective but I have not seen that and I do not believe that. I say that because Prozac boosts levels of all the neurotransmitters in the brain, not just serotonin, and it has good synergy with other meds, such as stimulants, tricyclics or antipsychotics, better synergy than the other meds. And it has a long half-life (7 days) that makes dosing easy and weaning easy. It can be easily dissolved in juice so as to drink custom-sized doses. Prozac is just a very unique, original and user-friendly antidepressant compared to its me-too copies.

imo

Thank but cant Prozac cause too much activation. And believe it or not Luvox predates Luvox. Available in Europe in 1983

hi. sorry about this. I think the going recommendation is 10% cut each month, less if you have problems tapering. gabapentin helped me reduce my abilify dosage...maybe that or another sedative could help easer the luvox taper?

good luck.

Joe correct luvox was in Europe for many years. Also prozac the first one I tried by day 3 was in a steady panic attack. I flushed all of them down the toilet. Very stimulating. Phillipa

Joe years and years ago I had a doctor that put me on 250 of luvox and felt great. But he wouldn't let me stay at that high a dose for long so he lowered it. I had so much energy maybe I was hypomanic? Still take just 12.5mg of luvox although the doctor I now see thinks I take 50mg which haven't in years. I could most likely go off it but since it raises the levels of valium and take this I think I would get really high anxiety do you?

What was his reasoning for taking you off 250. Highest dose is 300

No just thought the dose should be lower? So he lowered it. It had been working fine at the 250 mg though. I should do a google search and see if I see or can figure out why though?

There is no way to accurately predict activating versus sleepy or versus neutral. That's because everyone responds differently. We might see 'trends', but even those are subjective not factual.

I've seen people complain of how sleepy and tired Prozac made them feel. I've seen people complain of how activating and nervous Prozac made them feel. I've seen people cheer that it worked so fast. I've seen people moan that it never worked. I've see people say how awesome it is. I've heard people say they don't get sexual side effects from it like they do from the others.

I mean, this goes on and on. Predictions don't usually work. We have to try for ourselves or else we never know.

I have a real example. Me. Ritalin is a stimulant. It will rev you up. So what if you are already nervous with anxiety? You don't want a stimulant for that, right? That's what I thought. So imagine how surprised I was when eventually I got brave enough to try it. And I didn't get more nervous. Instead I got more calm, more peace, and I slept better than in years. On a stimulant that was supposed to make me feel activated. All of my preconceived fears were wrong.

Just saying. It's hard to predict. It's hard to generalize.

Here's another one. If you take Zyprexa you will gain massive weight. You will turn into a balloon. Right? Well in several years of using Zyprexa I started skinny and stayed skinny.

My dr upped my dose to 250 with 150 pm and 100 am. Rather than make a total med switch
