Anyone using CBD oil with medications

Posted by Mogger on January 9, 2018, at 10:26:26

Is anyone taking medications along with CBD oil? Wondering if there is synergy or a negative effect.

Not at the moment. Although, I will be trying CBD when / if various extracts become legalized in Canada over the coming year.

My sleep and anxiety is not well under control.

Hey Lamdage,

Did your CBD product contain any THC?

Hi Linkadge, it did not. Believe me i was disappointed because i thought i could replace the Antipsychotics in my regimen with CBD.

It has given me great anxiety relief and lifted my mood. Linkage I think there are ways of getting it from the US to Canada. I am from Vancouver! My question is that my meds and cbd oil use the cp450 to metabolize. Do you think it would be an issue? I have been told to take it 4 hours after taking my meds.

I have heard there isnt much of a reaction of the cp450 pathway between cbd oil and meds but would be grateful for your thoughts about me taking cbd oil four hours after meds. Thank you,

Hey,

I'm not sure how to answer that specifically. I am looking for information on the metabolism of CBD to see whether it is a enzyme inhibitor or inducer.

If there is an interaction, it may simply mean that the level of a med may increase or decrease.

For example, its not that you can't take grapefruit with certain meds, you just don't want to change your level of grapefruit consumption.

According to a pubmed article:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24160757

Studies of THC, CBD, and CBN inhibition and induction of major human CYP-450 isoforms generally reflect a low risk of clinically significant drug interactions with most use,

Yet, another study suggests...

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21356216

Potent inhibition of human cytochrome P450 3A isoforms by cannabidiol: role of phenolic hydroxyl groups in the resorcinol moiety.

If CBD is an enzyme inhibitor, it would be expected to increase the level of a medication (depending on the metabolic pathway of the drug) - somewhat like grapefruit.

This may just mean you need less of the drug.

What other meds are you taking?

What am I not taking!

1500 lithium carbonate
90mg buspar (grapefruit)
60mg mirtazapine
150mg sertraline
1mg clonazepam
300mg lamictal
5mg zyprexa

I was told by an MD to take CBD 4 hours after meds. Another MD said not to worry however I want to be responsible. I havent felt any side effects yet and I have been on it for 5 days. What do you think? Should I discontinue?

I just wrote a whole long response and it got deleted!!

The gist of my response was there might be an interaction with buspar & sertraline (increased levels) but less so with mirtazapine, lamictal & olanzapine. Lithium is metabolized by the kidneys so I don't think there would be an interaction.

I'm sure more data will come out, as the use of CBD becomes more widespread.

Personally, I wouldn't stop CBD - especially if you precieve a benefit. If you are concerned, you could reduce CBD and re-introduce it slowly - taking notes of any increase in side effects from other meds.

For example, if you ate one grapefruit a day (every day) it would not be a concern. However, it may mean you need to take less Buspar. When they say "avoid grapefruit", they really mean avoid *changes* in your level of grapefruit consumption.

Similarly, if CBD has a grapefruit like effect, its not that you can't take it, more that it might mean the doses of other meds need to be adjusted.

Bottom line ... do you feel any benefit from CBD?

Thank you for replying! There is definitely some legitimacy and strength in regards to CBD oil. There definitely is a lift and mood and anxiety relief however only at higher doses. I have just been referred to terpene oil for anxiety and depression which is taken from hemp but I see it acts as an ssri so I am wary of trying it.

I forgot to mention that I am using a tvns device at the moment called Parasym that stimulates the vagus nerve externally. This also has a powerful effect but I have noticed it is not for me in that my brain seems to be need less stimulation rather than more. It is actually aggravating my depression. Thank you for the feedback regarding drug interactions. I dont feel any so I am confident I have nothing to worry about.

I have been reading up on CBD and it has a lot of interesting mood related targets.

On interesting one is that it acts as an adenosine re-uptake inhibitor, a cannabinoid re-uptake inhibitor and a 5-ht1a agonist. All three of these could contribute to anti-anxiety effects.

It is powerful. It is confusing as there are so many strengths it is difficult to find the sweet spot. Have you ever tried Ashwagandha? It is another supplement I am trying that has pronounced anti anxiety effects. There are concentrated forms (Ksm-66 which I had to stop due it made me anxious!) and sensoril which I couldnt put my finger on it but didnt like its effects. I have found the herb whole no extract and am taking 6 grams a day. Seems to have no drug interactions and so far so good.

Your reasoning makes *a lot* of sense. Thanks for the info. Do you think CBD has antipsychotic properties?

And yet it made me terribly anxious (pure CBD without THC). It was worth a shot though.

Yes, I vape crystaline CBD often. Combined with Parnate and Lithium. But I smoke the bud too.
