managing amphetamine for depression + ADHD

Posted by beckett2 on October 31, 2017, at 20:00:58

Does anyone have experience successfully managing stimulant therapy? I've declined treatment because the come down is terrible. However, my doc wants me to reconsider. I already take nuvigil. Maybe that longer acting non-amphetamine stimulant will protect my mood from crashing. Any thoughts? Thanks

i've been through much of this, i was on a high dose of vyvanse, in the morning, and vyvanse takes like 2 hours to reach peak effect, lasts around 8 hours, maybe little more, then it slllloooowly wears off, i hated it, rather take regukar dexedrine that work quick and wears off quick, you could have a XR form scheduel, and other non-amphetamine meds, mainly is methyphendiate, and bupropion, and they also add selegine to a stimulant to prolong the effect, you might want to ask about that, but im sure if you can take selegine, it's safe, doesnt counteract.....

my old schedule was dexedrine spansule, i would 2 in the morning, it would last 6 hours, and i would take 2 at 3pm, which would last till 9pm which was exactly 12 hours, and then i could rest and get ready for sleep. It doesn't have the longer grueling wear off period like vyvanse, it just simply....leaves your system, quick and fast, but it tends to make you feel washed out kinda, but that's common.

as for methyphenidate, they also have long forms, like concerta, and almost focalin xr, which are good treatments, less amphetamine feeling and more just focus with less stimulation, they both increase dopamine but methyphediate is dopamine rep-take inhibitor, not release it like amphetamine

but consider asking your doctor about selegine to a ADHD med, it helps with the effect and keeps dopamine going even after stimulant wears off

A selegaline add on? I've never heard of that. I'm considering vyvanse. Even though it doesn't last nearly as long as advertised, I think it might be a little more subtle than spansules.

yes doctors do use selegine for depression and ADHD treatment, with stimulant, but it depends, i know someone who does use the selegine patch, and takes like adderall.....even thiought that would really pump dopamine levels alot, kinda scary.....but ask you doctor

spansules where the only med that usally helped me focus, they act quickly and usally duration of 6 hours, acts quick, and leaves quick....vyvanse is more....it go longer periods even after 8-9 hours but it' that slow wear off period, i hated it. but currently im on armodafnil it just keep me awake and alert.

hi. Focalin XR is a good idea. Back when the stimulants were more popular for depression, Ritalin was preferred over amphetamines for many people.

Its not technically for depression, but when I was prescribed phendimetrazine (Bontril) to help with weight, I found that it lifted my mood and helped me concentrate about as well as Adderall, but I didn't get as tense. I'm not all that familiar with it, but my doctor was able to give me refills on it, it was cheap, and it was just one big SR capsule in the morning.

Split dosing works for some people. I was briefly on Ritalin LA and then a focalin tablet in the afternoon. double the copay, of course, but there wasn't a horrible "crash."

Vyvanse seems like it could be helpful. I think there are other long acting Dexedrine formulations on the market, too.

i don't know what else you take or what's up for discussion, but the other psych drugs in the line up can make a difference. i had an acquaintance who did well on an adderall xr in the morning and a seroquel xr at night.

hope this helps.

Thanks Scott, I'll ask my doctor next week. Ritalin was in the not preferred column of the genetic test-- ? Not sure what that's about.

Hi CE, thanks for your input. Is Bontril another name for Phen Phen? (Or is it Fen Fen?) Wiki says it's a prodrug of meth? That can't be right.

I have some supplements coming-- so hopefully they'll help. My energy fluctuates every few months, and right now I'm very low. Whether it's 'just' mood or chronic fatigue, I hate it :( I hesitate to try a stimulant again because after awhile they feel sh*tty.

How have you been doing?

hi. I'm doing surprisingly well, thanks. Bontril was the brand name for the once daily phendimetrazine capsule I took way back when. I think they make smaller tablets, too, but I was only on the 1x daily capsule.

I've managed to drop the drug for depression and reduce my Abilify dosage. Good times.

I hope things get better in your world. Fatigue, lethargy...not fun. What supplements are you going to try? I've found that astaxanthin, on top of my ongoing Ortholecular protocol, helped w/ energy levels. I take a single 12mgs capsule per day, with a meal.

Focalin (dexmethylphenidate) is kind of a filtered and purified (dextrorotatory enanantiomer) preperation of Ritalin (methylphenidate). It contains only the active isomer.

As best as I can remember, Focalin was much smoother than Ritalin. Ritalin seemed harsh to me. Focalin lasted for about 5 hours, and there wasn't much of a crash. I did not try Focalin XR. It lasts for about 12 hours.

I had to chime in, I took adderall successfully for 8+ years as augmenting for mood. It wasnt' always enough, but i remember times when i was only on my adderall and pristiq (gabapentin PRN).

As two notes, 1. not any more. 2. it was ONLY the CorePHarma brand of Adderall.

The generic mfg of Adderall called CorePharma was probably a more consistent AD than many of the others i've been on. The focus and slight energy addition wore off in normal times but once it was consistently in my system for a week my mood stayed consistent throughout days and nights.

:( that company is now gone. and i've tried three other mfg of adderall and nothing. I then tried Dexedrine which did great for energy but nothing for mood and my focus was hyperfocused and in a bad way with my negative mood.
Now i'm on Evekeo. my focus and cognative ability is much better, but energy level and mood still in the toilet.
and Also, when med wears off... so do all its effects.
:(

Hi Eric, thanks for checking in. I think I'm not pursuing this any longer. They always destabilize my mood. I've tried many :(
