Starting parnate

Posted by chrismeurer on November 8, 2017, at 17:27:14

So I will have the opportunity to start parnate soon. Ive been taking clomipramine 25 mg, sertraline 50 mg for about 2 weeks, buspirone 15 mg for about 2 months and lithium 450 mg for a few days. My question is how long should the washout period be. Im actually aware that the recommendation is 2 weeks for most drugs, must this be followed precisely?

Typically washout period is 5xhalf life of existing drug. NE re-uptakes and SE antagonist some doctor will prescribe concurrently with MAOIs , so that could be a gray area. Drugs that are SRI or SE/DA releasers, I don't think you should deviate.

Your metabolism of certain drugs may vary, so be careful if you choose to deviate. For example gene testing says I'm a very slow metabolizer of effexor and doxepin. Doxepin at low doses is often used for sleep with MAOIs, but I need to be careful because my plasma levels will elevate.

See what your doctor says first of all. Some people will give more cavalier advice based on their own experience or research, but I would hate to be responsible for someone's accident based on science I think i have a grasp on. There are a lot of nuances. So make your decision carefully.

Good luck I spent 6 months on parnate and just switched to Marplan 4 weeks ago. If I can be any help just ask. They can be very rough on the ramp up and these forums were invaluable to me.

Cheers

Thank you porkpiehat :)
Will be very careful, I waited a long time to have this opportunity. Stopped clomipramine, sertraline and buspirone and kept lithium since it slows me down in a good way. I am very hopeful. May I ask how was your experience and why did you stop it?

100% agree. My PDoc made me wait 2 weeks, lost his nerve, made me wait another 5 days and then finally prescribed Parnate. I wanted to strangle him!

I was still taking Abilify and oxycodone (for chronic pain) during the 2 week period but they are known to be safe with Parnate.

I'm 2 weeks into Parnate, on 50mg and will also help out with questions where I can and am able.

So finally my doctor prescribed parnate. Will wait a few days and start. She wants me to take only 10 mg/day for 1 month. I guess better to be safe than sorry and wait, at least I will have this chance. Good luck pedr :)

Hmm, what's the rationale for staying at 10mg? Maybe wave this: http://psychotropical.info/parnate-starting-and-adjusting-dose under their nose if you don't respond to 10mg?

Thanks Chris, good luck to you too. If you're anything like me you need it.

My doctor is really afraid of parnate. Hopefully, she's reasonable enough and said that we will raise the dosage once we are certain that the side effects are not worrisome. I talk occasionally to Dr ken and he's awesome. Thank you.

Today I took 20 mg at 9 AM. My doctor agreed to raise the dosage to 30 mg though. Is it best to wait a few days before increasing? Been taking 10 mg a day for 6 days and felt generally more tired, but it is ok.
I am 23 yo and weight about 60 kg (~130 pounds). According to research, I believe that optimal dosing should be between 50 and 60 mg, will see. I also believe I have atypical depression with severe anxiety. Lithium 450 mg a day slows me down in a great way.
I am also trying neurofeedback at the moment. There's a possibility I might try rTMS in the near future.
Have tried about 20 drugs in the last 3 years. Paxil worked great for a few months. It was my first prescribed drug.
I wish everybody the best, people here are amazing and supportive.

Chris
