the shortest half-life through prescribing is Halcion, triazolam, it was used for sleep in the late 1980s in the US, its half-life is only 1 hour, they advertised it as getting you to sleep fast, and waking up rested and awake it's potent, it sedates heavily, but what i read is that the next day you have anxiety..when it wears off i read people would go into anger and anxiety states if you research on past use of triazolam you'll read many cases of bad reports, but others it works like a dream.

Will midazolam or triazolam give me similar social anxiety relief like Lorazepam?

When high on Lorazepam, nobody would think that i am on it because I behave normally. Is it the same with midazolam or triazolam?

Midazolam is for intravenous use. Intravenous midazolam is indicated for procedural sedation

Triazolam (Halcion) is a very potent hypnotic benzodiazepine with a very short half life. I don't know what else this drug is used for other than promoting sleep.

Has anyone already suggested Xanax (alprazolam) non-XR? Xanax has a fairly short half-life for a benzodiazepine. The average time is 11.2 hours, although this is variable interindividually. Compared to Ativan (lorazepam), Xanax usually penetrates anxiety more completely, and may have a mild antidepressant effect. Xanax can produce a greater feeling of relaxation than Ativan. One needs to beware of behavioral disinhibition with Xanax, though.

Hi Scott,

thanks for your post. no one has. I have experience with Alprazolam. Half life is shorter than Lorazepam?

I see that lorazepam has a 12 hour half-life, which is nearly identical to alprazolaam. However, the experience of hangover may be different between the two drugs. If the binding affinity of alprazolam is higher than that of lorazepam, you might be able to use a dosage of alprazolam that is low enough to prevent an extended hangover. That's just a guess, though.

Hi Scott,

i dont get a hangover from Lorazepam. Plus nobody notices that i am on the drug. Maybe i will just stick with Lorazepam then.

I didn't mean to say that alprazolam was more likely to produce a hangover effect than is lorazepam.

Let me ask this question: What would you like an anxiolytic drug to do that lorazepam doesn't do? What's missing with lorazepam?

There is a Xanax XR extended-release preparation. I should think that enough people were unhappy with the short length of time that alprazolam acts for such that there is a market for the extended-release version. Sometimes, half-life is not a reliable measure of how long a drug's effects last for. Regular alprazolam will work for about 5 hours. Lorazepam is closer to 8 hours.

What are you using lorazepam for?

Perhaps alprazolam is worth a try, anyway. You won't know how well it matches your requirements until you try it.

Good luck.

I use it when i am triggered by a severe stressor or for dates where i normally would be extremely nervous.

Alprazolam sounds good.

Maybe i can get it tomorrow.

Depends what you need it for, and how you're planning on taking the drug. The route of administration also affects the duration of action. Some benzos can be delivered by routes other than orally.

Also, there are multiple different types of half-lives, and none of which is the sole determinant of duration of action. Elimination half-life (which is usually what is meant by "half-life" if type is not specified) is itself quite variable. It can be affected by other drugs you're taking, if you've eaten recently, genetic variations in metabolism...you can see why it's so variable.

Oh, and it also matters what country you're in. Certain benzos aren't available in some countries. For example, I'm not sure whether you can get oral midazolam in the States. I've only ever heard of it being used in the USA either as part of a general anaesthesia cocktail, or for sedating patients who need to be mechanically ventilated.

I'd probably suggest either alprazolam, or taking lorazepam somewhat earlier than you ordinarily would, so that it wears off by the time you need it to. What dose of lorazepam do you take?
