Still not as stable as I'd like...

Posted by sheilac on August 10, 2017, at 16:11:18

I'm taking 10mg of Elavil for my Interstitial Cystitis and it helps my pain a great deal. My -doc is worried about it pushing me into mania.

I'm off Seroquel due to the severe muscle stiffness (scary, but I miss the great sleep).

I'm taking 2500mg of Keppra and 2mg klonopin a day. I still feel like I need a little more stability. Not sure what that would be. I'm afraid of lithium (made me fat with acne). Haven't tried Zyprexa in years because doc was afraid of weight gain.

I also have fibromyalgia and notice on the days I take my muscles relaxers, my mood is stable & fine. But my doc won't give me enough muscle relaxers to take throughout the day.

I also take Atarax for my bladder. I usually just take 50 -75mg at a time. Maybe I should bump that up and take it several times a day.

Any and all idea for meds are welcomed. I do t see my pdoc until end of month and I must have ideas to discuss with her.

As an alternative, you might try adding omega-3 (if you haven't already tried it). Magnesium can also help with some instability symptoms. Folic acid too, has been shown to augment mood stabilizers in terms of depression and mania.

As far as mood stabilizers, there all the other antipsychotics (have you tried abilify?), and all the other anticonvulsants. I don't know if you want to combine two anticonvulsants.

A drug like perphenazine (older antipsychotic, but similar to Seroquel in terms of helping anxiety and sleep) might help for stability.

Melatonin can help some people with bipolar symptoms, especially if sleep is an issue.

Which is the bigger issue, depression, mania, or just instability?

One thing I've noticed is you're hypervigilant about your mood state. You're very sensitive to changes and maybe just a little too anxious about them. You want to treat even the slightest instability with meds, when what you need are better cognitive coping strategies. So what if you're a little manic? What's the worst that could happen?

If you want to try another antipsychotic, I'm going to suggest haldol-studies in Germany showed that KEppra, when coupled with haldol, yielded excellent results.

I agree.

It is hard to know exactly what one experiences, though.

SheilaC, the things written here are not meant to diminish or delegitimize your thoughts and feelings. No one can know exactly what you experience on the inside. However, Phidippus and I agree that you *seem* to be hypervigilant and look at every drug response and side-effect under a microscope. You do not seem to give any one treatment enough time to work or evaluate. Perhaps you should start again with a new doctor. I don't know. One step at a time, Sheila. Don't overwhelm yourself with so many thoughts about your illness and treatment right now.

I'm sure there are alternative treatments that people can suggest to you, but I think it best to take the time to pay attention to what Eric (Phidippus) has to say.
