Can Meds Really Work That Quickly

Posted by Mermaid16 on September 5, 2017, at 19:58:38

I had been on Nortriptyline 75mg for six months. It was pretty good, but not excellent. I still struggled with some anxiety and agoraphobia. I decided to give Clomipramine a try. Somewhere during the change over which was very quick (off Nort within 4 day and on Clomipramine 25mg per week increasing. At 100mg I was having some very fast heart beats 160bpm. Depression and anxiety overcame me. This was last Thursday. Thursday night I stopped the Clomipramine and started back on the Nort. 25mg for one night and 75mg there after. Today is Wednesday, yesterday, the depression lifted. The doc increased the clonazepam because of the quick change over, so anxiety is sorted, although I will see her again Friday morning to see if I can reduce the dose because I don't believe I need it that high and don't want to change anything when I just started feeling good yesterday. Is it possible for the Nort to have lifted the depression in less than a week. I am almost to afraid to say I am feeling better just incase. Kind of like 'touch wood'. Anyhow that's my story...just seems kind of strange. Tracy

Anecdotally, the TCAs can work faster for some individuals than SSRIs. TCAs block a brain chemical called acetylcholine. Acetylcholine blockers can be 'fast acting' antidepressants.

That being said, a fast response to antidepressants can (occasionally) be a sign of bipolar. However, since you were not responding to other meds, I wouldn't assume this is the case. However, just something to keep in mind.

I am personally on nortriptyline and lithium. I love nortriptyline. I would say it worked for me fairly quickly and I have fewer side effects on it than many other drugs I've tried.

I respond within a few days to some meds. I'm confident it's not placebo too since it doesn't always happen and I don't expect it to since I'm so depressed.

Minocycline did it for schizophrenia or lymes in 3
