i have been taking 150 trazadone for sleep for a year now......no longer working...dr. says reduce 50mg per week...does this sound reasonable?

Hi Joe,

Are you going to do a cross taper with mirtazapine?

Yeah, 50mg a week sounds reasonable.

If you can break the tabs in half, you could do 25 every half-week.

The biggest effect you might notice is rebound insomnia.

yes would decrease the 150 trazadone down to 100 and start 7.5 remeron then continue to do 50 a week until 3 weeks is over......I would like to try the remeron but I obsess if it will cause weight gain

If mirtazapine causes weight gain, it will be from increased appetite. It doesn't appear to have a metabolic slowing effect (like olanzapine).

So, you should know fairly soon how it is affecting your appetite.

I wouldn't obsess about it. Try it and monitor your weight. If you start to gain, you can always switch back (or try a different med altogether).

dont stop and start new medication at the same time. You will not know what is causing what. Everyone (MDs) who got into the topic of psychmed discontinuation will tell you not to do more than 10% less every 4 to 6 weeks.

so you believe going from 150 to 100 for a week and adding 7.5 remeron is too fast??

No, its not too fast (unless your body tells you its too fast).

You said that Trazodone was being used as a sleep aid, and that it wasn't working. Do you really need to go through 10 weeks of slow withdrawal (with arguably worsening insomnia) only then to introduce remeron? Nonsense.

If you were getting off a drug "for good" (i.e. not replace it with a similar med), then yes there would be an argument for a longer withdrawal period.

As you reduce the med, perhaps keep a small journal (i.e. day, dose & observations). Sure, if you notice things are not going well, then slow down and perhaps book another appointment.

I would play it by ear, and listen. I think you can break the 50mg's in half and go slower, if needed. 50mg in one step might be a bit too much, but 25mg (say every 3 days) would be a bit smoother.

Just my 2 cents.

As you can see it depends on who you ask. Good luck

I'm just saying that dropping 25-50mg a week would be a typical schedule for trazodone.

For those more sensitive, more time would be needed.

so how is it going? Withdrawal effects can have a latency. They can appear one or more weeks after the dosage reduction.

This is the end of the thread.
