Posted by joe f on August 30, 2017, at 7:23:03

has any one used remeron only for insomnia ..at what dose--did it work and did it put weight on you? I have the option of using remeron or upping trazadone from 100 to 150...been on trazadone at 100 for 1 year.

Remeron worked very well for me at doses as low as 1mg. 1-3mg seemed to be the insomnia sweet spot for me.

The only issue I was having with mirtazapine was that it had a very long action. It didn't seem to clear my system till noon (or later) the next day. I have since switched to nortriptyline which isn't as good for insomnia, but I do have a bit more energy in the morning.

However, for insomnia, mirtazapine was probably the best med I have taken.

It wasn't an issue. I was also taking Effexor at the time. However, I'm not representative. Despite trying to gain weight, I have not been able to gain a single pound on any medication (remeron, zyrpexa, Seroquel you name it).

I have tried trazodone. Trazodone did help my insomnia, but not to the same degree as remeron.

Trazodone wasn't as good for sleep onset (I'd still take 45+ min to fall asleep on it). With remeron I generally fell asleep in under 20min.

Of course, different people have different experiences. The only thing I'd suggest with remeron is to keep the dose low.

If depression is under control, very small doses of remeron can work well for insomnia. I literally split a 15mg tab about 8 ways. Or, I would dissolve half (7.5mg) in water and just drink a quarter or so.

If you're using it as an antidepressant, higher doses will be needed, which may not work as well for sleep.

I suppose it depends on what dose you are on, but usually it is not associated with significant withdrawal.

There is overlap in the actions of the two drugs (antihistamine, 5-ht2a antagonism). So if there is withdrawal, mirtazapine should help mitigate it.

What other meds are you taking?

OK.

I took remeron with luvox and they went fairly well together. I had insomnia on luvox too (which is strange as it is supposed to improve sleep).

Just a question, have you taken clomipramine before??

If you have not, I would say this is a **definite** medication to try in your situation. It is the gold standard for OCD. It is much better than luvox for depression and it has significant 5-ht2a antagonism (generally improving insomnia).

If remeron does not work, I would definitely ask your doctor about clomipramine.

the problem for me with clominpramine is that I have heart issues and I don't think its recommended for patients with heart problems...also how much luvox were you on and what time did you take it....thanks

Hi Joe,

I was only taking 50-100mg of luvox. I tend to under-dose medications. I too have some OCD tendencies and tend to get scared away from taking full doses of meds.

Depending on the heart issue, you could be right on clomipramine. I think, in general, it is safer than other TCAs in that regard. Clomipramine is the gold standard for OCD and has a built-in sleep improving profile.

Anyhow, luvox and remeron can work well together.

Let us know how it goes.

I hated traz. Since you've been on it a while it may blunt the sleepiness of remeron, maybe, maybe not.

Of all the sleepy antidepressants remeron was my favorite for that. I found out that even just crumbs can be powerful and sedating. I would take doses in the 3mg rang up to about 7.5mg. A full 15mg just made the next day too groggy for me. But as the months went by, I found myself slowly creeping to higher doses. But if you don't have a tolerance to it, remeron can be great for sleep at ultra low doses.

Geez, you can go up to 600 mg on Trazodone.

Remeron never made me sleepy except during the day.
