sedation and Parnate

Posted by porkpiehat on August 2, 2017, at 12:43:04

I'm holding at 20 mgs of Parnate. I was up higher but the lack of sleep, social apathy, etc. wasn't good.

I am noticing a weakness and tiredness similar to when I was ramping up, especially a few hours after dosing after the stimulating effect wears off. However I am also recovering from the flu. Normally I would have jumped back up to 30 or so when the depression starts to kick in, but I'm enjoying people again, sleeping, sex drive.

Has anyone else experienced an increase in weakness decreasing parnate? On the ramp up the weakness is attributed to an initial drop in NE I think.

I've also been switching back and forth between hydroxyzine and trazodone for sleep FWIW and both seem to help with mood/anxiety in their own specific ways.

Thanks

i've heard of this, parnate has the stimulating effect, then it leaves.....never been on parnate, but sedation later on during the day.....that's a well-known thing about parnate

let other posts here write about it because they know more about it....

So this is the second time I've tried this with positive results...I'm feeling extremely tired and weak with the parnate (especially after dosing) especially since I started taking trazodone 50 mgs for sleep.

BAM! 5-10 mgs propranolol and that lethargic weak feeling is completely, utterly gone. Any notable irritability is gone also.

Can ANYONE think of why this could be happening?
On nights when I take hydroxyzine instead of trazodone I don't fair so well. It has a much longer half life and propranolol seems to add to the sedation.

anti-histimine with trazadone makes an unpleasant altered mind state, hydroxyzine is an one, it's good for colds, and anxiety, but mixing those it's not pleasant, don't interact well

but i think the tired feeling is norepinephrine and maybe a stress chemical, maybe like corisol, that strains the body, making it tired, when there stopped, it could rejuvenate back to normal....just a thought, propranolol blocks directly norepinephrine and epinephrine. I've taken metabolsim enhancers that were herbal, wierd plant stimulants.... they made me so irrtible and tired at the same time, i'm not a fan of herbal medicines, hardly work and have wierd reactions

I think we are similar. Hydroxyzine gave me very altered states the next day after I took my effexor and lamictal. Not so much now on parnate. Things like valerian root, yerba mate, ginseng, and sarcosine have always made me feel screwy. I find Lamictal often gives me this feeling depending on what else I'm taking.

I never take the hydroxyzine and trazodone at the same time.

I am juggling notions of NE action in me. Other people say it boosts their moods but both effexor and parnate and desipramine have always made my zoney, sad, and socially detatched. I can read, pack for vacation, and not lose everything I lay my hands on though.

conventional wisdom is that tiredness is caused by depleted NE, especially at initiation of MAOI. Propranolol apparent works as a NE reuptake inhibitor centrally in addition to beta blocker peripherally. So either theory could be true.

Do you know where I can find out more about this?

Thanks.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propranolol#Mechanism_of_action

Also serves to antagonize 5ht1, which I suspect is why it quells my explosive anger and (perhaps) why buspar, trazodone, and the many of the antipsychotics make me irritable and/or distant. Or not, I'm thinking out loud.

Hi porkpiehat

I`m on 80mg Parnate in the morning. As you say the it is very stimulating but the effects wears off rapidly after 4-5pm. I tried to devide the 80 mg but if I take it too late then I have problems to fall asleep. I take it with other meds and have low blood pressure (the pressure gets normal when I take the parnate but then goes down again). So this is counting perhaps also to the tiredness and fatigue in the evening. I dont have any restrictions to food. I can eat chocolate or a whole Pizza without any blood pressure problems coming from the parnate. Do you have anything in mind what I could take with the parnate to stabilize my blood pressure. I took Midorin which my doc prescribed me but there was no effect at all.

I would be careful about assuming that you can eat anything with Parnate just because you don't have hypertensive reactions to pizza processed mozzarella cheese. I doubt you would fare as well with aged cheeses like blue cheese or aged "summer" sausages and salamis. Please be careful. I eat pizza all of the time. I can eat fresh sausage, but not pepperoni. Pepperoni triggered a throbbing headache at the base of my skull in the back of my neck. Classic.

Hi Scott I know what you mean and normally food restrictions have to be done. But here is the point: everybody is different and eats different food in different quantities. In my case (and I take 120 mg parnate since 5 years- not 80 mg as I mentioned for mistake) I had only in the beginning minor rise in blood pressure which gave me headaches. I dont eat some of the food (which can cause problems) because I dont like it. Otherwise I eat also old cheese, chocolate and any meat (as well as salami) without problems. I do only drink on occasion and I havent had any reaction to wine, beer or other alcoholic drinks. I dont want to make parnate harmless with this post but I. I would like to encourage others to take parnate if they tried everything else. There are plenty of foods you can eat and not everyone have to make the syme reactions. Tyramine is less common / in fewer quantities in foods like years ago. This is the result in changed production processes. (I have an interesting article about that from the German Company which sells Jatrosom 20 mg tablets -- Tranylcypromine) Of course there are traditional foods liked aged cheese... which didn't change as well.

Please also be careful with beer. I drank bottled beer without problems on Nardil (MAOI) but when I tried a pint from a bar in London I was in lengthy agony from the head/neck pain and was ambulance'd to the emergency care ward for a good few hours. Not recommended.
