Lithium

Posted by Markwell on August 17, 2017, at 17:14:29

I'm currently taking 900 mgs of lithium. I have a bp1 diagnosis. The only antidepressant that ever worked for me was Paxil. Should I try that again? Is it ok for a bp1 patient to use an antidepressant ? I would appreciate any input...please!

you could do paxil again but i've read alot of bad thins about paxil, it's not so much popular anymore, but still its good for some.....one thing that i would stay away from is effexor, if you havve bp1 that could really effect the mood, effexor is known for one of the strongest but can increase to much nuerotransmitters.....

don't want to sound too generic, zoloft is a good depression med, i used to know all of them off the top of my head, slowed down after time, but zoloft is defintly a good choice if you wnat to stay with SSRI's ... it has good improvements, but for TCA's and MAOI's im not knowledgeable about them, but i do know that Imipramine (Tofranil) one of my friends who had bp1 took it and seem to work

Thanks for the suggestion. Does tofrinal help with insomnia? Insomnia is a big issue for me.

i did some quick research, acutally i take that back, Tofranil is sometimees used in scchizophrenia, but not bipolar disorder, but my girlfriend's aunt has bi polar and she was on tofranil, but from the research i found, its not an ideal thing, sources stated Prozac is usally the best, which that's wierd because Prozac can cause mania but there saying it's been used with Lithium matience for bp1......i take prozac its very good for improving mood, yet its wierd because i've read prozac can cause mania, but for bp1 they say its effective with Lithium, but those are only sources, like i said girlfriend's aunt takes Tofranil with other mood stablizers, seems to be stable

but i kept find alot of these sources were saying that for bipolar II, it's risky but maybe you could ask the doctor about a low dose of antidepressant, i would stay away from any high doses because of destablization

the other option is lamotragine, which now im thinking that would be good, i've read bi polar 1 is a major difference between bi polar 2, if you were on a moderate dose of prozac if you had shift that would be not good, lamotragine is a mood stabilizer but helps with depression, while lithium helps with controlling mania

just talk to your doctor, if he thinks low dose of antidepressant would be good

I tried lami ctal but couldn't sleep. I went sleepless for about two months. I need something sedating I guess. Any thoughts?

the main one that seems to fit: amitriptyline (elavil) it has sedative and takes away anxiety and improves sleep, but....make sure the mood stabilizer is there, because i read even this med can make a individual flip if not treated with mood stabilizers in bp1, vortioxetine (brintellix) - it's known to sedating, its newer but not sure about it's benefits....the others like Remeron and Trazadone and Paxil and Doxipen are along with it

What does your doc think? BP and antidepressants can sometimes mix, but one needs to take care.

I went to the dr today and she recommended I take 25 mgs of seroquel to get my sleep under control. She wants to try lamictal. I tried it in the past with not much luck. Is lamictal generally better for bipolar 2? My big concern now is depression with severe agitation. Will lithium help with agitation? Lots of questions...I need some relief!

yes, lamotragine is good for depressive symptoms in bi polar 1 and 2, doctor has to make the choice, not sure if they would be hyped to use the ones i researched on posts above

lamotragine is a stablizer and slight mood anti-depressant, but it just brings you back to baseline and keeps depressive episodes away, that's far as i know, i take 200mg tablet, i did take 400mg but that was too much, dulled out. Seroquel is a well-known for insomnia treatment, i've taken it before

really if you think, just talk this over with doc, i've given suggestions that would totally not be appropriate in their view

I took seroquel and slept well...a little groggy in the morning. What about Prozac for depression. With lithium on board is that an option? I'm desperate to get rid of depression.

prozac can work for anxiety, but it's known to be a stimulating SSRI, it's not like effexor and cymblata, which bump up norepinephrine, it raises serotonin and somewhat works norepinephrine and some dopamine indirectly.......don't take prozac before bed, usally in the mornings or afternoons

mood improvement = it depends , but some people ... it doesntt work for them, for me i can smile at people through the day, and feel everything is "ok" other people need stronger meds,...i've read about, effexor has seemed to be a the big champ for resistant depression without using MAOI's, my counselor told me she took prozac and didnt work and moved to effexor and everything was back, but effexor is strong and using it in a mood disorder is risky, it increases much of serotonin and NE than others. Prozac for me just .... feel everything is "ok" do have bad days, but their not as bad as not when it was there, in dark depression depths

I take a small amount of lithium to help suicidal thoughts. I think it really helps. They found out that suicide/homicide rate is lower in places where lithium is higher in the municipal water.
