any thoughts on these weird parnate/sleep meds?

Posted by porkpiehat on August 3, 2017, at 15:44:07

Trazodone is working great for sleep ( on the parnate 20 mgs and lamictal (plus some gabapentin at night). HOWEVER after a few days I've noticed:

-An increase in interpersonal anxiety and irrational fear (I'm in trouble, something bad is about to happen).
-increased sex drive, other healthy motivations and less fixation on drinking and fishing that came with parnate.
-daytime sedation and weakness after Parnate/Lamictal dose is much worse.

There are a couple of complicating factors: I've been sticking to 20 mgs parnate instead of jumping back up when depression starts to return. Some of these could be from a slow parnate poop-out...but would the weakness that came from Parnate start-up return on the way back down??

I wonder if the 5ht1 agonism of trazodone is working against me in terms of anxiety or the MCCP metabolite? Something in this mix is making me dead tired and confused when I take my parnate and lamictal mid-day.

I was taking hydroxyzine and gabapentin for sleep at night. The former was starting to fail, and I was getting increasingly impatient, bored, and mean at the end of the day. I stopped for trazodone. Hydroxyzine antagonizes 5ht2 like the others and may block NE/DA in addition to its anti-cholinergic effects. Very long half-life, AND it was used to treat "psychoneurosis" at one point, which is something I traditionally suffer from. On the hydroxyzine, I would definitely enjoy a "lift" at parnate/lamictal dosing time. On the trazodone the exact opposite happens (as noted above).

Almost too much to really parse out. It would be a shame to lose my sex drive, sleep, and healthy interests!

You might give it some time. Occasionally, sometimes it take the brain time to adapt to serotoninergic agents. There could be some sort of serotonergic interaction with parnate. Trazodone is a weak SSRI, which can be a problem with an MAOI.

I'm dealing with some sleep issues of my own. However, amitriptyline isn't cutting it for me, at the moment.

sometimes, especially with trazodone and lamictal, I've found that timing makes a difference.

Today I held off on the lamictal and upped my parnate to 30mg. I got no stupifying or tiredness or weakness. My throat got tight and I got a little shy and nervous. I took my lamictal at 7pm and that went away. Felt a little zoney and calm but it's the end of the day so not too bad. Maintained sex drive most of the day also.

It's a little too much planning and obsessive with the meds but trying to make life bearable until I can find a good pdoc.

I'm supposed to be taking Effexor (37.5mg) lithium (300mg) and amitriptyline 10mg.

These are low doses, I know, but I am sensitive.

I don't find much helps my constantly shifting (later and later) sleep times. Benzos work, but I don't like living one them.

Ugh sleeping on effexor was the worst. Lorazapam worked not much else did other than hydroxyzine and seroquel for me.

Funny you mention lorazepam. I was about to say the same thing. Lorazepam is about the only sleep med that works consistently (for me).

I don't know whether to ditch the Effexor. For me, most of the side effects are tolerable, and it works for my depression, but falling asleep is difficult, and my sleep time seems to constantly push later and later.

I have also been using the supplement phenibut, which seems to work well for me (with generally positive effects on mood and anxiety).

However, I don't know whether I can use this long term (i.e. whether the FDA will yank this supplement if they haven't already).

parnate may have to be adjusted on the dose, but many many timees i've seen posts here about the sedation that parnate gives after the stimulation effect is over, parnate is good antidepressant, strong, but it has side effects alot, including what your describing. You could have a dose schedule, take certain times

tranzadone is good for sleep, i used to be on 150mg a night in 2005, but i noticed either i was glued to the bed the next morning and felt unpleasant sedation and cognitive functions were blurred, it blocks the reuptake of serotonin but also stops the release of it in some serotonin receptors, its a wierd med, its popular with psych hospitals for near 0 addiction potential, but it also can make you feel very unpleasant at time, sometimes i would still have insomnia on it, and would be a bad mood too

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trazodone

this may not be synergy with what your posting, but sedation later on from parnatet after stimulation has demished, trazadone could increase that sedation and make you feel like junk feeling

Did you stick with the Effexor regimen? Are you able to take doxepin with it. Low dose is effective sleep aid
