Starting lamotrigine.

Posted by jonhed on January 9, 2017, at 10:42:42

I start lamotrigine treatment on Wednesday to cope with my personality disorder and my strong emotions that handicap me in my everyday living.

I hope it will turn out fine and with methadone keeping me down on earth i will not freak out and discontinue lamotrigine at the first side effect as i usually do, so this should be fine!

I will keep you updated a little!

lamotragine is mainly a mood stablizer but targets more depressive symptoms, while lithium is more for prventing mania episodes, its a good med with me, there's no major difference but i do feel stable and get out of slumps when i take it

good luck, keep us posted

Yeah, i was on 200mg back in 2012 and as i can remember i was pretty pleased with it.
The thing is that lamotrigine have vera dangerous interactions with illegal drugs, and i was forced to quit due to the fact that i was on a lot of drugs back then.

So i didn't stop because it didn't do it's work, and therefore now when i am stable and clean, i will try it again and see if it can stabilize me as it did back then!

It is used for borderline personality disorder to, beside bipolar!

I have dependant personality disorder and express a lot of the same emotions as i would if i had bpd!

Kind regards / J

Hi jonhed, this is good news. I love lamtrigine! It's the only thing that has stabilized my rocky moods. My issues look like a personality disorder--cyclothymia, c-ptsd, super social anxiety. Ah, if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck.

Good luck! I didn't know lamotrigine was particularly contraindicated to illegal drugs, but regardless, I support your sobriety.

Good to hear that you are pleased with it!
Can i ask, are you on lamotrigine right now?

I started yesterday and right now i'm, sadly, super paranoid about the side effects..

But i remember that if(!) you get a rash or sore throat, that it doesn't mean that it is dangerous and if a doctor checks it and tells you to continue, that should be fine.

Am i right?

And can i ask you if you had any side effects that have now gone away?

It should be very very helpful to know if you had any side effects!

Kind regards J

I've taken lamotrigine for several years now with no side effects at all. I'm completely unaware of it, except in the sense that I have experienced fewer deep descents into darkness. To me, it's as innocuous as taking a daily vitamin.
The rash side effect is dangerous but rare and, if it happens, it will happen soon after you start. It's not something you have to worry about in the long run so that every rash or sore throat becomes a cause for concern.

Hi jonhed, did lamotrigine help you before?

I take 250 mg. In the beginning I felt uncomfortably amped up, but this subsided quickly.

I understand paranoia, and I was fortunate to have a reassuring psychiatrist whom I trusted.

Hang in there!

I found Lamictal to be side effect free except for some transient insomnia in the beginning which dissipated in a few days.

I have not insomnia due to that i eat 1.25mg olanzapine and that works for me.
And i sleep well on stimulants so i'm a bit different that way!

I feel great now and i can't wait for the day that i am on 200-300mg and it start to have a robust effect on my mood as it had the last time i ate it!

Can someone explain to me why i, for about 2 month now, just need 1.25mg olanzapine, and in extreme(!) cases when i'm super paranoid, 2.5-5mg are needed but that has just happened for about a week 4 weeks ago!

My Methadone-doctor/pdoc says that methadone itself are very antipsychotic and that means that i just need a very small dose of a dopamine antagonist.

I think he's right, but what do you think?

There are many studies that comes to the conclusion for the same thing, and they have found that schizophrenic patients are very helped from heroin and morphine and therefore so many people are using it for self medication.

I am one of them, but i don't have schizophrenia, just a lot of psychosis but for the most part i have extreme paranoia and somatic paranoia (if you know what i mean, i have for about 6 years been listening to my heart 5-6 hours a day, which have become a big problem for me as i can't work or do stuff that i want to.).

But, opioids have always made me come "down to earth" again and start to think rationally!

And one more question!:

Have someone here tried iloperidone? and in that case, did you have and EPS?

With methadone i can finally tolerate antipsychotics cause it takes away the eps for most of the time! :-D

ps. Lamortigine works very well and i am so damn happy with my regimen!!

Methadone 90mg, A fairly low dose compared to the "normal" that is 130-150. But i have 90 because i want to be able to have it for the rest of my life and that isn't possible if i go over 100, cause then the qt-interval and hormone changes comes.

1.25-2.5mg olanzapine. Great, finally i can take it!! I know that some of you have heard me talk about antipsychotics for years but haven't dared to take it, so i say finally!

lamotrigine, the dose that we're aiming for is 250-300!

You are on a low dose of Zyprexa. Zyprexa hits a lot of different receptors and does not necessarily go to the dopamine receptors first. This is explained in Stephen Stahl's books. But this a funnier, rambling explanation by a psychiatrist who I think is drunk.

Ignore the ranting and scroll down about 10% to the pie charts.

The rash is a rare side-effect and chances are minimized by starting at a low dose and building up. I experienced anxiety attacks when my dose got up to 100 mg.day, but temporary low-dose clonazepam helped me through that. Eventually, I was pretty much side-effect free. Unfortunately, I had to go off it as my govt. drug plan wouldn't pay for it (story of my life).
