Are you sure that you want to deal with this situation using medication?

Trump and global populism will not be quick to disappear. I think you are eventually going to have to deal with the current state of affairs - whether or not you add an anxiolytic. Of course, you don't have to passively accept things. Writing letters and protesting is one way to deal with this. Seeking counseling is another way to deal with your anxiety and concerns. It might very well be best to use an anxiolytic temporarily to break the depression-anxiety cycle. You might also consider adding nortriptyline.

Thanks Scott. Always respect your opinions.

Psychotherapy (or a support group) would prob be most helpful but yea in the meantime I really want to +feel+ better.

I wish my doctor would be willing to add a tricyclic. We had a least one discussions where he expressed a strong belief they are prone to triggering mania in bp1 though. This was as monotherapy so I highly doubt he'd considering WITH maplan.

I'll keep weighing my options. Just starting to feel a bit helpless...

i hate to ask, i know your asking for advice, but how does Marplan make you feel? because i've read about it and have been considering it, i talked with my doctor about it. I'm on 80mg of Prozac, maximum dose, and i've tried 120mg of it, didnt really notice any improvement. Prozac does help me get away from depression yet it do still have a mood slump where i'm not content with anything, it's very unpleasant. I do notice if i go days without prozac, i fall in my moods

but how does marplan make you feel, does it just make you feel content the mood? like everyting is ok and feel serene.....prozac used to do that, and then after 11 years it lost that effect, yet still does have antidepressant effects

People are organizing like crazy. I know the website change.org has actions people can take. Participating in protests and other actions can make you feel more in control and get you in touch with like-minded people. I know people with no history of mental health problems who can barely contain their anxiety about the direction of the country right now. Anger is a more useful emotion now, though, than anxiety.

Light therapy helps me considerably, and I only started a week ago. My mood tanked after the election. I think every psychotherapy session since Nov 8th has involved the election in portion. I felt grief and anxiety. In fact, my GAD reemerged, and a few panic attacks (oh joy!). I am beginning to feel better with clearer resolve. As the current POTUS said, democracy is not something to take for granted. Keep your eyes on the prize!

Certainly you are not alone in experiencing upticks in anxiety and depression at all.

I'm trying to keep a sense of humor about it. Maybe it's the beginning of The Apocalypse?

Social disintegration, the emergence of American Fascism, brought to you by The Electoral College. God bless The Founding Fathers, those rich, old, white male slave owners.

I'm so relieved at the results of the Election. I'm a Deplorable and proud of it. And believe it or nor the World is going to be a much better place with Trump in office. It's going to take at least a year for the Obamacare to change. So many have lost their insurance and can no longer afford meds due to Obamacare. I subscribe to Medical Newsletter from being an Rn. The articles are skewed due to the media being Controlled by the current administration. When read the comments back from the doctors, the RN's, and other healthcare workers. Some who also take meds for yes mental conditions they are all in defense of Trump and voted for him. The Doctors & RN's say that the media is trying to make others believe they were for the crook Hiliary who should and will be in jail I hope as you or I would be if we did what she's done. And she needs to return the items she stole from the White House when Bill was in office rightfully back to there. So believe it or don't things are going to get better. Rome wasn't build in a day. At least give Trump a chance!!! Phillipa

If you are happy/thankful then keep it to yourself or find a political forum. The tone of your message is part of what stirs fear in me. Glad you are thankful but I am suffering and wasn't trying to have a political discussion.

Thanks.

It's hard for me to say since I've been on it so long but I think contentment is probably the best word. Along with lamictal it keeps my depression at bay. It's subtle though....not so much a body feeling or anything just a better sense of well-being. I did try Nardil for a period but A LONG time ago in 2005 and from what I remember that was a lot stronger. I don't have any side effects to speak of w Marplan though so that's good (no mJof weight gain...anorgasmia mostly gone after some months...never had a diet issue).

That's interesting. My depression seems to have improved since Trump got elected.

I had an optimism that I have not had in a long time. Interest rates have been going *up* and I am finally getting a bit more return on my savings.

The problem is that CNN had been crafting / fear mongering a doomsday scenario in order to keep Trump out. Not only didn't it work, but now we have to deal with the fallout from this strategy.

Trump is going to do just fine. Just stop watching CNN. Democrats / CNN are just bitter and are trying to paint Trump out to be something he is not.

Protesting the election results is a waste of time and will not change anything.

The solution is when you realize that Trump was elected through a democratic process, and he will not be the 'Hitleresque' figure that people paint him out to be.

The stock market has been going UP, because smart business people are actually believing that his planned policies might actually improve the economy. They are investing likewise.

Being homosexual myself, I have *not* been offended in the slightest about Trump getting in. Under Obmama, people have learned to be professional 'offendees'. They decide to be offended about everything, rather than deciding to be resilient and shrugging things off.

If Trump offends you, then make the choice not to be offended. There are always going to be people who offend you. If you live your entire life being offended by anything and everybody, its going to be much more painful than it needs to be.

And again, don't waste your time with useless processes. Trump got elected democratically. Being bitter and protesting for the next 4 years is a waste of time.

Thanks for sharing Phillipa.

The fact of that matter is that some people are happy, some people are sad. Some people are miserable, and some are ecstatic.

I didn't want Obama in. But about 4 days after he was elected I decided to move on with my life.

It's sad that CNN has been misrepresenting Trump and painting him out as something to be feared.

Unfortunately, groups of susceptible people have bought into CNN's narrative.

Really. Turning this into an argument about whether Trump's policies are good or bad is not what babble is for.

If someone is feeling bad after the election, they are feeling bad. I was not suggesting protesting Trump's election, but his policies if and when he pursues policies people find disturbing . Taking concrete actions to change things when you are disturbed is better for mental health than worrying by yourself.

I should add that protesting, etc., is what democracy is all about. Even an official you supported and voted for needs his/her feet kept to the fire. An engaged citizenry is the bulwark of democracy.

Yea It's funny but Freudian projection is what Foxnews (100% pro-GOP) and Turmp use often (saying they're the doing XYZ when in fact it's them doing XYZ) but it's scary how bashing (ANY) media is the thing. This is another thing that scares the crap out of me. I'm afraid of nuclear war. I'm afraid of an angry man running the country. That's all.

But I agree w/ Baseball. I didn't mean to start a political/media bashing discussion.

And I hope I don't sound like I'm trying to get the last word in (I'm sure someone will follow).

I do think being a little cynical about it is the only thing I can do.

I am hoping to make some sort of med change also though to at least _try_ to feel a little better. It's an odd choice but I'm considering talking to my doctor about adding Modifinil. I took that once when samples were avaiable in the mid-00s and I remember it being somewhat helpful. I found a few pubmed studies that showed it can be helpful as an adjunct for BP depression and also seems to be ok w/ MAOIs. The cost was the main reason my doc and I had didn't really discuss it in the past but I found that with a "GoodRX" coupon I can get a 2 month supply for ~$100 (200mg pills which I can split).

Perhaps the addition of Modifinil would allow me to get into video projects which are a hobby of mine that I use to keep my mind off of current events (I haven't been able to enjoy fun things the past couple months).

I could also try going up on Lamictal maybe (from 200mg) but past attempt to do that have just made me tired.

I think it would be best not to discuss personal politics on the Psycho-Babble Medication forum. A discussion of political beliefs is bound to become heated, distracting, and upsetting to those who are susceptible.

Perhaps you can start a thread on the Poltics forum.

Hi Peter, I'm sorry the election result has triggered so much fear and anxiety for you, and I hope you'll feel better over time with or without med changes.

It was a big shock to me, too. I was going through a full-on grief reaction with fear, anxiety, and heartache. Every morning I'd wake up, remember what had happened, and feel like I didn't want this life. I decided to give him a chance after his first meeting with Pres. O, then like you I lost hope when the inflammatory tweets started up again. Cue renewed grief cycle :-(

I hope you'll update us as to how you're doing.
