that sounds really rapid and probably a recipe for bad discontinuation problems.

Some people do better switching to a roughly equivalent dose of Prozac and then tapering off that. Prozac has a half life of 5 weeks or something crazy like that, so tapers aren't as painful.

I don't know a whole lot about SSRI tapers. I think alternative health people have supplement suggestions you might want to google. 7 years on a psych drug means the brain has adapted, and getting it back to a more normal state is going to take some time.

Hope things work out for you and your wife.

thank you .....you seem to think the amount of time on it is more important than the low dose?

my best guess is that its like with neuroleptics/tranquilizers/antipsychotics: the big deal isn't dosage, it's cumulative expsoure.

Low dose, but long treatment=more overall drug, which ideally should=slower taper.

That's my wild *ss guess on the matter. There's also the psychological aspect of withdrawing from drugs, and SSRIs are sort of emotional novocaine, so there may be some upheaval, emotionally.

The orthomolecular and other alternative health people swear by supplements. I do my own DIY orthomolecular, and it helps, but I still need the psych drugs. Maybe you should check out the alternative health people and see what you think.

I'm glad you're there to support your wife through this. Hope things work out well.

that cannot be correct if you tapered 10% of 10mg that would take you to 9mg...sorry that doesn't make sense

getting on psychiatric drugs is easy. Getting off is not. Almost everybody that endorses getting off them recommends the 10% rule.

you either get empty capsules and a scale that is sensitive to milligrams and crush the pills OR you crush them and make a liquid from the drug. So she would take a 5mg pill and 4mg in a liquid or capsules.

10mg - 10mg x 0,1 = 9mg
9mg - 9mg x 0,1 = 8,1mg
8.1mg - 8.1 x 0,1 = 7,2mg

You get the deal. Then once you are very low and reductions no longer produce symptoms, you can try to stop completely.

the problem is that some drugs can't be tapered like that because they come in only a few dosages and can't be cut. when i have tapered off parnate, which is only available in 10mg tablets, unsecured, I went down by 10mg every 2-3 weeks.

yeah, enteric coated tablets can be a problem. Luckily none of the drugs i take are enteric coated.
