Lyrica, Gabapentin, Phenebut neurogenesis

Apparently 'gabapentanoids' (i.e. pregabalin, gabapentin and possibly phenebut) enhance hippocampal neurogenesis.

I can't take pregabalin or gabapentin. They produce cognitive blunting and some dissociation that persists long after the drug is discontinued.

What other drugs or substances enhance hippocampal neurogenesis?

Hmm...

There are a long list of them...

I would go to pubmed.com and search for

"enhances neurogenesis"

Everything from hormones, to monoamine agonists.

I don't know if this link has been posted before but it's saying that R-Phenibut is a gabapentinoid.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26234470

Sounds like it could be pretty helpful. Never tried it myself.

Although if you have addictive tendencies self medicating with Phenibut seems dicey. I just was in a thread over on bluelight with a guy who was abusing it and got up to 32 grams a day! Apparently your tolerance builds very quickly because this escalated over the course of a couple months. And then he quit cold turkey! Just when you think you've heard it all.

So now he's got severe anhedonia and is in a real bind.

Off the top of my head: If your friend believes that he has no alternatives, perhaps he can explore:

Lamictal
Abilify
Nardil
Effexor
Memantine (Namenda)

Memantine might be a long shot, but if he has OCD, it might be worth a try.

I think Linkadge would have some good ideas.

If Nardil is not to be tried, he might consider a combination of Effexor + nortriptyline + Lamictal.

I'm biased because I take it myself but I think a little bit of Lithium could help almost anyone with depression who is not getting 100% symptom relief from their primary medication(s). Even just 600 mg in my experience can turn the volume way up on the AD. And I'm a tough nut so I bet a lot of people could take smaller doses and benefit. It's a somewhat underappreciated option I think.

Poor mice, what we do to them, God forgive us for what we to to our fellow beings in order to help ourselves.

I take only 300 mg/day of lithium, and it does help. I also take it in the hopes that it will help prevent Alzheimer's Dementia.

Thanks for these contributions. I have been trying to persuade my GP to put me on Gabapentin to help withdraw from diazepam & methocarbamol (Robaxin), get me back to normal sleep, and deal with both a tendency to GAD and anxiety as a side-effect of my antidepressants - Lexapro (Cipralex) & Bupropion (Wellbutrin). She's being rather conservative and reluctant to change my regime. After 5 years of benzos, & several abortive attempts to get completely off the darned things, at age 71 I'm getting a little impatient.

I was on Gabapentin for a while 12 years ago for insomnia; it was good, but trimipramine seemed better at the time. Unfortunately, as I age, the half-life of trimip has increased to the point where I sleep almost all day on a relatively small dose (50 mg)

This all started because my government drug plan does not support Cymbalta, which was working well for me. Effexor is evidently better marketed. I can't take it: huge anxiety. So instead of the plan paying for one med that worked, it's now paying for a combination of five including the benzos. False economy! Grrr. I'm about ready to write the Minister of Health.

I'd forgotten about Lyrica. According to Wikipedia, the Federation of Biological Psychiatry says it is first-line for GAD & perhaps benzo withdrawal, whereas Gabapentin is strictly off-label for GAD, insomnia & benzo w/d. But it looks like Lyrica has a considerably worse side-effect profile. I'd appreciate further comments from people who've been on both.
