Suggestions on what to add to Paroxetine

Posted by Laney on July 12, 2015, at 12:57:11

Hi all,

It's been awhile since I've been here but I need some help. I've been on paroxetine for like 18 years and well, it's murder to try to come off of as most of you know so I'm interested in ideas to add to the paroxetine. I don't want Nortriptyline because I've used that before but gained a ton of weight.

The last thing I tried doing was a taper of of the paroxetine while starting escitalopram per my doctor's advice. I ditched the idea at some point and don't even really remember exactly why but now I feel worse than before?

I realize some of this is hormonal but something's gotta give.

Thanks for any advice you may have. I haven't kept up with meds and I know a lot of you have!

Thanks in advance!

Laney

I dunno...I think it would depend on what's going on that you need to deal with. Wellbutrin is commonly added to SSRI drugs, especially to combat apathy and lethargy.

Other than that...BuSpar, a higher dose of Klonopin (or a switch to xanax, xanax xr, valium, ativant, blah blah blah), Provigil or an old school stimulant. I read somewhere that some docs have used Straterra, an ADD/ADHD non-stimulant drug, with some success. Like I said, it really depends on what the problem is.

An atypical antipsychotic is an option. Low dose abilify, seroquel/seroquel xr, maybe geodon...something like that. There's lithium, too, but...I personally wouldn't do that because of the whole kidney thing.

Good luck!

Are you currently taking nortriptyline? You could replace this with desipramine, which is a bit more energizing (less likely to produce weight gain).

Wellbutrin might also help.
