Do you plan on trying it?

There is a PDE4 inhibitor named rolipram that is used as an antidepressant in Japan. I don't know how effective it is.

I am trying kanna now. I was taking Sam-e with good results. I stopped the Sam-e, waited 1 day for it to wash out then started kannna.

I didn't want to post until I was sure I felt a response and not a placebo effect. I also wanted to see how coming off, withdrawal goes because
as you may have noticed in the past I have said positive things about a med before and changed my opinion 180 degrees about it in later posts. For example; modafanil seemed like a wonder drug for me until I stopped. Withdrawal from it was traumatic. Thought I was having a stroke. Topirimate was another one that worked good at first but when I stopped, felt horrific, like I was slipping into a coma.

Kanna is absolutely astonishing. Perhaps it is the best AD I have ever tried. Unlike pharmaceuticals, I feel energised but without the teeth gritting, hypomanic, impulsive effect some MAOI's and SSRI's cause. It's effect on social anxiety are astonishing. Maybe more effective than Nardil. Side effects so far: nausea, headache, transient anxiety after dosing which fades gradually. Libido and sexual function has increased off the charts, like I'm 30 years younger. Seems like it is the first time I had real sex in decades. My girlfriend has noticed a dramatic improvement and wants me to keep taking.

This is an extremely pro-social med. Seems to me it works by reversing anhedonia. Things that used to be a difficult, eg. working, walking, talking, driving, shopping, smiling, trying to make conversation, talking to people, all took an effort, causing some degree of discomfort. Sceletium makes it pleasurable, flowing. Unlike SSRI's, benzo's can cause rage, moodswings. Kanna makes my mood stable, carefree. I haven't noticed any psychedelic effects, however nature appears more beautiful, vibrant. Sitting still and listening to silence is somewhat pleasurable. I bought a magazine 2 months ago, tried to read it countless times. After starting kanna I read it front to back.
Interestingly, I find it more difficult to focus on television.

The scary thing is kanna research is so fragmented there are no studies on long term effects. Could it be big pharma knows kanna is the cure, abandoned the studies because their terrified of profit loss?

Also:

Apparantly, this substance acts as a combination serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI) and phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE4) inhibitor. Of course, the extract might do other things as well.

As an SRI, it is probably a good idea to take precautions not to precipitate serotonin syndrome with sceletium.

Can you post a link to the product?

I love what you had to say about it.

"Is sceletium kanna easy to get?"

I've read its legal worldwide. It was very easy to order in the USA, (illegal in Louisiana).

I found a lot of sites and spent a lot of hours researching each site (with not much success), before i purchased, I took my chances with this site:

http://www.sceletium-tortuosum.com/

I'm don't recommend this site. I'm just saying it is where I got it from and it seems to be satisfactory. Delivery time was less than a week. The site claims that the product originated in Namibia. I'm a guessing a lot of stores are importing it from there in bulk. After ordering I noticed several stores on eBay were impressive and maybe cheaper.

"What is the route of administration?"

I first tried the tea. It's good tasting. tried smoking it and worked nearly the same as the tea of course much faster. Tried a small amount under the tongue, which was almost the same as smoking. I'm reluctant to put anything in my mouth that isn't sterile. I have OCD and it gave relief from that as well..

I'd like to say I don't smoke cannabis. I've tried it with scary results that gave me panic attacks in the 1970's I gave up on it in 1979 and haven't smoked it since then. While smoking sceletium the odour and flavour was incredibly familiar as I recall. But the effects are vastly different.

"How much does it cost?"

I estimated that it would cost me under US$50.00 a month to keep the dose I'm on. About 150mg of the tea cut every other day.

I should tell you that I almost gave up on it because of the nausea It was quite pronounced. Also, the first 1-3 hours after administration causes moderate anxiety. Feels almost like an anxiety attack coming on. After that the familiar feeling I used to get somewhat similar to an SSRI.

I'm really concerned about purity. Could easily be contaminants and heavy metals. No way to know. I wish I could find a certified source. I wish there were more studies. I found a fb group called "sceletium", but was a bit disappointed. All information seems rhetorical, fragmented and incomplete.
Youtube has videos of people "snorting" it at higher doses to get high. This can be prohibiting its use. giving it a tainted reputation. Many pharmaceutical drugs can cause euphoria taken this way. I'm taking it for relief of my severe anxiety. I haven't experienced any euphoria.

Forgot to mention I did get a headache on and off and the nausea was seemed worse after dosing, less pronounced after but still present from time to time. Also noticed amazing energising, motivational effect similar to when i was taking vyvanse which caused some insomnia which I had to take melatonin, antihistamine and 1mg clonazepam to sleep. Sleep has been an ongoing problem for me for years. You may want to keep your sleeping meds. But inversely I have noticed some nights were amazingly deep sleep since starting sceletium.

I recommend not getting the "cured" sceletium and getting the fresh cut. From what I've been reading the fresh has more alkaloids making it more effective for anxiety and depression while the cured seems more for getting high.

Thanks for the good luck wish!
I just want to share my experience so someone else can benefit.

I'll keep everyone posted on my progress.

Great info! Prices seem low. Thanks.
Sadly, growing my own plants would be a challenge with the long winters in my region, but maybe alongside of my non-GMO vegetable garden / greenhouse I'm planning on building it may be possible someday.

"Can i drive a car on kanna?"

Motor skills seem unaffected. I have been driving. quite a lot. For those that rapidly ingest such as snorting, smoking, possibly there could be a problem.
One thing that concerns me is sceletium users tend to get a "far away look" in their eyes. Is this some kind of mood-stabilizing anti-psych effect going on? That would be contrary to euphoria? I don't think mood stabilisation and euphoria can be achieved at the same time.

I was wondering about dilated pupils and other side effects so I found this video of an individual taking a large dose. I can't see any dilation.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h090LhDukxU

I too am not sold. Seems too good to be true. I needed a break from the headaches. I haven't taken a dose for 3 days. Feels like its out of my system. No brain zaps. No withdrawal symptoms. Depression has returned but not as bad as before. Maybe placebo effect or curative effect?

This seems to be most serious study I have found about Sceletium....

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3828542/

In another study someone said sceletium has "truth serum" effects. To me sceletium feels like a strong tranquilizer almost similar to a mood stabilizer with a "kick" that seems to soothe the pleasure areas of the brain. I'm taking a low dose for derealization, anxiety and depression which has decreased since starting just over 2 weeks ago. I've seen sceletium listed as a "nootropic".

Headache and nausea side effect are making me look for another source of sceletium.

Any further info on sceletium will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Lamdage22, I do hope you do get a chance to and it helps improve your life.
"Zembrin" (brand) sceletium, from what I read sounds reputable, the profits of which go to the aboriginals of South Africa possibly the ones that have been using and growing it for generations. I'm not comfortable buying from sites that sell legal high products. Although the qualtity may be the same or better. For now I'm going to stop sceletium. Maybe I'll buy some Zembrin and try it. Before I started sceletium I have to say it was in the scariest state of mind I have ever been in after being destabilized by a trial of topiramate. 3 weeks of sceletium and I have improved 90%. Was it coincidence, placebo effect, or could have possibly improved without sceletium? Impossible to know. Stopping it hasn't caused any w/d symptoms or rebound depression.
I wonder if the effects can be lasting? Curative?

Decades ago a psychologist told me Nardil had a lasting curative effect that sometimes continued to keep patients depression free long after nardil was stopped. I haven't seen any mention of this anywhere.
My reasons for stopping are many. I noticed tachycardia, unusual discharge during BM, insomnia, anxiety during onset of dose. Most disturbing of all I didn't seem to get much brain work done while on it and my desk is a mess but my yard is imaculate. It may not be a good med for a professional person. The lack of studies, reliable sources to buy from make this med a little scary. Maybe they will find that it is safe to take with other serotonergic meds, AP's etc.. This would be good news.
