A sleep medication I can take during the day?

Posted by revv33 on February 5, 2015, at 17:32:43

Ok so I take abilify 10mg for psychosis and during the day I get very tired and have no choice but to lay down and try to sleep but I never am able to fall asleep...

Is there anything I could take to make me fall asleep with the abilify 10mg I take?

How do you sleep at night?

The thing is... long daytime naps induced by additional meds could lead to disturbed night time sleep and worsen the situation. In general, taking sleep drugs during the day is not recommended except in special circumstances eg. for sedation in people who are seriously ill. If you were to take a sleep aid during the day, you might just feel even more tired for the rest of the day.

Have you discussed with your doctor whether there is anything you can do to reduce daytime fatigue? Do you find caffeine helpful at all? Most stimulants are unsuitable in psychosis but small to moderate amounts of caffeine should be safe, but only in the morning and early afternoon.

Yeah, I would not take a sleep med during the day, really for any reason.

If the abilify makes you sleepy then maybe take something to counteract that instead.

yea, mostly the best thing is taking a antianxiety med, they have used this stuff called halcion for jet lag, but that was back in the 80s, it has a vary short half life, and can cause anxiety when it wears off, but it's kinda used to take a nap,

i think you should ask about nuerontin, or a low dose benzo for anxiety to calm

...but only if severe anxiety is present.

The main problem here appears to be daytime fatigue. Antipsychotics can cause fatigue.

Other common causes of fatigue may include:

1. Excessive alcohol intake. This is a major cause for many people with mental health problems.
2. Lack of regular exercise.
3. Poor quality of sleep at night.
4. Poor diet/nutrition.
5. Medical problems such as thyroid disease, anemia and diabetes.

These issues may need to be looked into by a doctor if fatigue is a problem. Some blood tests may be taken.

I would suggest exercise and coffee to counteract the fatigue. Consider modafinil. It does effect some of the receptors associated with schizophrenia, but I doubt that at the therapeutic dosage it would induce psychosis. I believe Nuvigil or Provigil could be beneficial to your quality of life. Discuss with your doctor.
