so...wellbutrin sr...

Saw the shrink yesterday. Went OK, I guess. He wrote for the usual (Daily: 30 Abillify, 1200 Trileptal, 100 Lamcital...PRN: 2mgs Risperidone, 100-300 Neurontin), plus a new daily medication: 100mgs Wellbutrin SR x 2.

What should I expect? Anything? I just need something to help concentration, mostly, but a little bit of a mood lift would be nice, too. I asked about Straterra, but he settled on Wellbutrin.

OK. And...when combined w/ a neuroleptic...is Wellbutrin still effective? I'm so confused.

Hi CE,

>I just need something to help concentration, mostly, but a little bit of a mood lift would be nice, too.

What sort of concentration problems do you have? I was wondering whether taking Trileptal in combination with Lamictal impairs concentration at all?

>OK. And...when combined w/ a neuroleptic...is Wellbutrin still effective?

To be honest, it's not really know how Wellbutrin works! It's a unique drug which remains rather mysterious. Despite being chemically similar to certain stimulants, it's far less dopaminergic than the abused psychostimulants. Wellbutrin itself is a very weak dopamine reuptake inhibitor, a weak NE reuptake inhibitor and an antagonist of certain nicotinic receptors. One of its metabolites is an NE reuptake inhibitor too - which could account for its antidepressant effects as well as its apparent efficacy in ADHD.

I don't think Abilify will prevent Wellbutrin from helping. After all, there's very little evidence that Wellbutrin works via dopamine pathways at all. The very weak dopamine reuptake inhibition may not be enough to produce any elevation of dopamine levels. Wellbutrin mainly works though other mechanisms, it seems.

Occasionally, people report feeling that their concentration is impaired by Wellbutrin, rather than the improvement which might be expected. You can only try it and see....

If you suffer from insomnia, it might be worth taking 100mg in the morning for a few days to test for tolerability before increasing to 100mg twice a day.

wellbutrin is like a cup of coffee in the morning, some people it improves mood, but it's diffrent kinda of mood lift than SSRI's, it's mainly on dopamine but not strong as much as psychostimulants, and NE.....

alot of people have said wellbutrin causes anxiety mainly due to NE increase, i was on wellbutrin, it did help me get going in the mornings, but later i started noticing i couldnt take a nap during the day.....it kinda kept me slightly awake

it is a good antidepressant and with me it slightly imrpved concentration, but to the comparison of psychostimulants like methyphenidate......

there's also the XL form which lasts all day, but be sure to take it in the morning so it won't last till night time

I do think the anticonvulsants (100 Lamcital, 1200 Trileptal) dampen my mood and impair concentration. I asked about dropping the Trileptal and increasing the Lamictal, but the shrink was all "I like this combination, blah blah blah," so...I guess that's out, lol.

I assume he thinks Trileptal is providing mood stability? He could be right. Anyway, good luck with Wellbutrin. Post your progress.

I took Wellbutrin a while ago. Some people I know swear by it - a good anti-depressant and somewhat stimulating. For me, I had , I guess, a paradoxical reaction. It made me depressed, fatigued, anxious. I had to stop after just a few days.

You're not the only one to respond like that. Another negative reaction some people have is an increase in irritability.

Wellbutrin did nothing for me. Just did a 300mg/day trial about 8 months ago. Took for two or so months. Just made me more agitated. But I have a really bad anxiety disorder, so perhaps not the best drug for my symptoms (though it did seem to help in combination with Prozac in the late 1990s; mood lift, activating but in a good way). What happened? Who knows. Worth a try, though, right?

Its only been a couple days @ 200mgs, but I think its helping. I mean, its mildly stimulating, in way that's both non-euphoric and not jittery-making, so...yeah. I think a big part of what I need is just a lift out of my dark moods, and some help w/ concentration.

I don't know why, but I'm still obsessing over adding 5htp to the mix.

Looks promising :)
