Benzos are safe for your brain.

Posted by willyee234 on August 21, 2014, at 23:21:05

You just have to do some light googling, and find medical sites and youll see time and time again for different reasons benzos are shown to be safe and protective on your brain.Heres one i just happen to stumble on among many

I found the article quite interesting. I wonder if it also can mean that diazepam will protect brains of anxious people? And for long term, daily use?

Hi G I wonder same as it seemed both articles were for gerbils who had a stroke or other blood flow problem to the brain. I worry about Alzheimers all the time 44 years is a long time of benzo use and I read short term in the gerbils. Please correct me if wrong. P

Chronic anxiety and stress damages the brain in genetically vulnerable individuals (low resilience). Even if benzodiazepines were to possess no mechanism to effect neuroprotection directly as does lithium, they would work indirectly by reducing anxiety.

There are some concerns regarding the use of benzodiazepines long-term. There are a few studies that report the emergence of cognitive and memory impairments. However, as described, these impairments are usually minimal and may not even be noticed by the patient. However, these impairments may persist beyond drug-discontinuation.

Thanks for the info Scott. I am on Valium now. I c/o from my Klonopin so I could taper off of benzos for good. I could not taper Klonopin. Im down to 6.5mg of Valium from 10mg, which is what I c/o from .5mg Klonopin. I take it once daily, just as I did Klonopin. I feel no diff on Valium, and it's easier for me to taper.

I did see that it was short term, but as Scott pointed out, long term anxiety is bad for your brain. I just want off all meds for awhile, tho.

The short term effects statement were part of one article of many,as i stated if the terms These observations suggest that benzodiazepine use is actualy protective on the brain.

Scott as usual nailed it,anxiety is a toxic over firing state much like a seizure, and much like a seizure this heated over active over firing state is toxic which might explain most anti anxiety agents are indeed actual anti convulsants just in miniscure doses. The thinking i imagine is a similiar toxic issue is at hand so why not use the same treatment only at a much much much smaller dose.

But here is another article from an extremly reputable site,

"The protective effects of stress control may be mediated by increased brain levels of benzodiazepine receptor agonists."

Heres the article, and i said google this and look for strictly medical sites and youll be amazed at the results. And like scot said at doses most benzos are used, for example im on klonopin 1-2 mg i have no memory or cogntive impairment at all.

A famous doc on the use of benzos actualy stated the opposite,he stated that in a toxic anxiety full stated your mind is a mess, you cant think straight, and a very small pieace of klonopin that clamps down and calms that and allow you to think clearly instead not only does NOT DECREASE cogntive iimpairment but instead raises COGNTIVE ENHANCMENT AND CLEARER CALMER THINKING

This article can be found with a google of DR CHENEY KLONOPIN its a very interesting perspective on klonopin.

And i forgot who mentioned they were on 6 mg of their benzo,no insult implied i swear but concern,i never seen anxiety so bad that required such a high dose, its actual not the standard either, was there a reason it was so high,im not surprised you suffered on it that must have been very tough to manage dealling with,im proud of you.

Thanks for the link. Very interesting. And ur right, if youre very anxious, it's prob similar to seizure happening in brain, with all the firing off going on. I will always have my klon for a panic attack or an acute short term(hopefully) anxiety issue. I do think you should keep ur dose small. Mine was .5mg once a day. That's all I needed for 5 1/2 yrs to control my anxiety. But these pills have been so very difficult, for me anyway, to taper off of. Ive had to c/o to valium and still must go very slowly. I wish they were easier to taper once you no longer need them.
