is there a way to have my ECT date sped up

Posted by poser938 on April 8, 2014, at 21:25:17

I have a consultation with an ECT Doc on April 28th.. and after I had already been trying for 3 weeks to get my records sent to that ECT Doc, they finally scheduled an appointment, but now its 3 more weeks away just for the consultation.

I'm so tired of going through the days feeling like a dysfunctional joke. 3 more weeks seems like forever. I figured if I were to seek ECT, then it would be a quick process, since its mostly for people in dire need of help. But this is taking too long.

You had a sleep study? I would not want to have ECT if I had never consulted with a sleep medicine specialist and had a sleep study with at least four to six hours of documented sleep in the lab, before I ended up having ECT done.

Sleep apnea untreated can cause unGodly severe fatigue and make you "hung over" looking and feeling all day. Which can easily masquerade as "severe depression." I fell into that trap for ten years before finally getting onto CPAP therapy in 2007. Anytime since, if I have a problem with my CPAP therapy or equipment, I relapse back into "depression" almost instantly. Sleep medicine specialists have their own terms and stuff, for the fatigue and sleepiness they call it EDS or Excessive Daytime Sleepiness.

I'd hate to have ECT when I also had undiagnosed and untreated sleep apnea. On the other hand, if I had sleep apnea and got it treated with CPAP and still had mood problems, ECT is a good way to proceed, psychopharmacology has a poor track record at fixing severe problems.

not to scare you, but..ect made me stupid. As in, I was dangerously dumb for a while there. I think they went hardcore on me, though (involuntary).

Do you have any idea what kind of ECT you received? I think the newest, supposedly safest form is "Ultra-Brief ECT".
Though I have no idea which form I will be receiving yet.

Poser do they decide the type when you have the consult? How do the docs make their decision of which would be best for each person? Phillipa

I'm really not sure yet, Phillipa. But I'm thinking different hospitals develop their own protocol that work off what ever official guidelines their are for ECT. Some hospitals may feel that "Ultrabrief Pulse ECT" hasn't been fully proven to work yet.
So they'd stick with a form that has been in use longer. But I'm positive if I'm told they are doing "Sine Wave", then I won't be up for that. If I remember right, Sine Wave is the oldest form of ECT, and is much more likely to leave you with severe side effects.

Unilateral and Bilateral refer to the placement of electrodes. Unilateral is electrodes on one side. And Bilateral is on both sides.

Sine Wave, Brief Pulse and Ultra Brief Pulse are different forms of electric current. I think it has to do with how long the current lasts.
