Will a secondary mood stabilizer help?

Posted by phidippus on April 5, 2014, at 16:10:01

My mood is not what it should be. I'm having this perpetual giddy nervousness that benzos aren't touching and I'm also having depressive symptoms at the same time. Would it benefit me to take another mood stabilizer?

Eric

I get something similar...edgy, nervous giddiness. Anticonvulsants do it for me, especially Trileptal (I take 1200mgs/day). I also take Neurontin when I need it, 100mgs per dose, up to 3x daily. I also take 30/Abilify and 150/Tofranil and do Orthomolecular.

I seem to recall reading that there's some data on lamictal+lithium showing good results.

I think it would help immensely.

Prescribed multiple mood stabilizers are an integral part of many medication regiments for patients.

I agree, I'm on lithium 900mg, Lamictal XR 125mg, and 7.5mg Abilify.

Each does for me what neither can do alone/ target different symptoms and others synergistically, and I am able to use all 3 at relatively low does which helps with sides. It took a psychotic mixed episode and a month in the (worst) hospital this past summer to realize that lithium alone was not enough for me.

I would suggest, based on my intuition for you, Trileptal. Oxtellar XR looks interesting as well...

Keppra looks worth investigating too.

I take many different things, but my mood "true mood stabilizers" are lamictal 200mg. and topamax ER 200mg. and I can definitely target different symptoms and others synergictically and I believe the two at the same has allowed me to keep both doses at the lowest effective dose for each.

I love Keppra, but it leaves me depressed.

I'm currently trialing Tegretol.

The reason for the second mood stabilizer is to help keep my mood stable as I treat my OCD with antidepressants which tend too destabilize me.
