Viibryd or Brintellix= SSRI + Buspar?

Posted by mogger on January 27, 2014, at 16:23:28

Zoloft has helped me with my ocd and Buspar was a great addition for anxiety (went off it because of weight gain unfortunately). I sweat so heavily with Zoloft and as I say Buspar caused weight gain. I saw my pdoc the other day and he said that Viibryd and Brintellix both have similarities to both an ssri and buspar combined. In other words he said I might be able to get the same benefit of taking either Viibryd or Brintellix as opposed to taking both Zoloft and Buspar. Has anyone had experience with this scenario? Many thanks for your thoughts,

Mogger

I responded strongly to Viibryd. Buspar is 5ht1a agonist-agonizing this receptor provides both an anxiolytic and antidepressant effect. Viibryd is a partial 5ht1a agonist and Brintellix is a 5ht1a full agonist. Brintellix is also a 5-HT1B receptor partial agonist, a 5-HT1D receptor antagonist, 5-HT3A receptor antagonist, and a 5-HT7 receptor antagonist-all of which contributes to its antidepressant and anxiolytic effects.

Latuda, Geodon and Abilify are also 5ht1a agonists. In OCD, there is often too much dopamine in certain parts of the brain, so the tactic of adding an atypical antipsychotic is used. Adding an atypical with 5ht1a agonism sometimes proves particularly effective in treating OCD.

Eric,

Thanks for clearing up all this it is very interesting. It sounds like Brintellix could be quite powerful. Are you still on Viibryd? I remember your horrible Serotonin Syndrome experience so I am not sure if you are off it.

Sorry to hear it. How is the lexapro? Have you seen this new medication called Fetzima yet?

Its actually the first time I've experienced tachyphylaxis with a drug. All of a sudden I started getting panic attacks and depressive symptoms. I switched to the Lexapro and the problems ceased.

Fetzima is just another SNRI, though it does seem pretty potent.

Is anyone worried that Brintellix would be too potent? I won't take full doses of SSRI's b.c. they numb me out too much and can make me manic.

I loved the combo of Celexa + buspar until the rage started (1pp I think).

Right now I need more control of obsessive thinking and concentration, but I don't want to be super numb. Brintellix is FULL 5hta1 agonist? Would that be a sledgehammer cure for a hangnail?

Brintellix proved super effective for my OCD. OCD will never be a hangnail and Brintellix is just strong enough for it.

hehe I just got my samples today!

I'm down to 10 mgs of Celexa for the switch and I feel great. I almost don't want to ramp back up on anything. My mind is a little less busy and my sex drive is back, and I'm getting a good range of emotion, but I'm sure it will turn dark if I wait too long.

Hopefully I'll have some positive reports myself!

Do you think if you had gone up to 20mg slower you could have continued on it or was the throwing up inevitable?

I think I started upchucking at the 10 mg level. I couldn't have gone up more slowly.
