How to talk to a psychiastrist???

Posted by poser938 on March 11, 2013, at 14:06:48

Since the psychiatrist I had been seeing told me that my case is above her expertise, I'm going to be seeing a new pdoc here soon. Now, my case was somewhat above her expertise from the beginning and she always asked me what my ideas were before she would make her suggestion for a med that I could try. But I was thankful to have a pdoc that didn't tell me I was delusional when I told her about medication having seemingly permanent effects on me. And she did seem very knowledgable. She diagnosed me with depesonalization and nearly an absence of affect.

But I'll be seeing the new psychiatrist here soon that she recommended. Of course I'm hoping for a very knowledgeable one. But so far it seems no doctors are well versed in what to do in a case like mine, where medication has longterm effects on me, whether bad or good, 99% of the time. I'm pretty much out of ideas for meds to try and have been looking into herbal things, but I'm just hoping to find an answer from a good psychiatrist. Or at least to be pointed in the right direction. Maybe Deep Brain Stimulation. I just don't know.

I'm just hoping this new psychiatrist can point me in the right direction. Maybe to get the right tests done to try to figure out what is up with me and my brain.

I just can't be told that I am wrong when I mention about meds affecting me longterm after stopping them. It is clear as day to me. My family has seen it. The most scientific answer I have gotten from a psychiatrist is that "these medicines just don't work like that". I wish that were true. I wish I could just try any new psych med and hope for the best like most people without
Experiencing longterm effects from them.

But that's what mood treatment is based on, trial and error. This system doesn't work for me.

This happens with physical problems too. I've heard many stories from people on the news or a talk show, whatever, they knew something was wrong with them but had to go to a lot of doctors before one said, this is what you have. It was right there for the right eyes. Just hard to keep pushing. Good luck.

That happens everyday. There was a show the other night where instruments and sponges were left in patients during surgery, closed them up, intolerable pain. Some lost their lives as they knew them as the immune system either failed and allowed infection that destroyed other organs. I have severe back pain since a surgery three years ago which started immediately after the operation. Now I wonder if a sponge left in? Phillipa

I just wish doctors would sto putting all their faith in medicine.
Maybe. I think its a CT scan that could be done to reveal any abnormal things in the body, like sponges. Of course that would be a hassle for you to get done, not to mentiob the money for it. Or maybe its just a botched job done by the doc.
Of course if you went back to the same doctor it would be much easier for him to do a pseudo examination and tell you his work had nothing to do with it.

I have never had much fait in natural treatments for medical problems, especiall when it comes to problems of the brain. And I started regularly talking to a pharmacist who believes strongly in using natural things like herbs and supplements. I thought in the beginning that some of his ideas with them were a little far fetched. But slowly I've been getting more into his way of thinking. So I've been doing more and more reading about different supplements anf I ended up getting Maca root a few weeks ago. It helps. I have a bit more endurance throughout the day that's very welcome. I'm in a bit better mood, too. And it has caused some intense dreams, esoecialy if I take it later in the day.

Now I'm looking at Rhodiola Rosea. It does cross the bliid-brain barrier and is a COMT inhibitor, which degrades dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin and makes it easier for amino acids like tyrosine to cross into the brain. Its similar to how an MAOI inhibitor works.

Just wanted to share this, hopefully others will look into herbs and supplements, rather than put all their faith in antidepressants. I know antidepressants have their place, but I'm starting to think that natural remedies deserve to be consdered, too.

Plus currently used meds are basically herbs like digoxin for the heart. Many others also and have some arnica montana on hand for any injury as a plastic surgeon's sister is a homeopath in Florida and clued him in to use for surgeries before and after no swelling no bruising. And at home if you think you might get a bruise take it sublingually 3 tiny tabs 4x a day for a few days. It works. Phillipa

Talking to pdocs is difficult and even stressful for me. Rarely do I know what to say and thus always bring some notes.

Out of the countless herbals/supplements etc which I have tried Licorice Root Extract was exceptionally promising but I had to stop taking it due to a bleeding side effect which I may have brought upon myself due to possible interaction with Resveratrol. Should not be taken together.

Anyway, Licorice root had a very noticable benefit in terms of greater ability to enjoy things, increased sense of general happiness, positive emotion, and empathy. Some positive effects can be felt within a day even if initially they appear subtle.

More widely it is used for Adrenal Fatigue among other things but the anti-depressant effect is very clear. Some people claim it functions a bit like an herbal SSRI. It also enhances progesterone hormone levels which could explain the lovey dovey positive type feelings I had.
