Which MAOI Causes the Most weight gain?

Posted by Trace206 on November 18, 2012, at 16:52:52

Nardil, Marplan, Or Parnate? I've herd MAOIs are known to cause weight gain and I might be going on one of these in a few weeks... Does anyone know which causes the most and which causes the least?

I'd say that Parnate causes the least weight gain

From what I've read, Parnate causes the least weight gain.

Good luck!

Well, my appetite has decreased on Parnate. I am making sure that I get plenty of my macro-nutrients (protein, complex carbs, good fats, no or very low trans-fat), I am also eating a lot healthier with a lot of fresh veggies and fruits along with lean meats. I also take a multi-vitamin, B-complex (sublingual), alpha lipoic acid CoQ10, fish oil, and melatonin, right now.
Also, plenty of water and fresh ginger tea.

Hi.

Your diet strategy is great. Keep going.

If I may ask, why are you taking the alpha-lipoic acid (ALA)?

Thanks.

I hope the Parnate works for you. If you get only a partial response to it, don't abandon it. There are things you can add to it that might bring you to full remission. I happen to like either desipramine or nortiptyline because I have seen success with them. If this is the first time you are being exposed to these drugs, you may be particularly responsive to them.

I use alpha lipoic acid because it is a potent anti-oxidant. What makes alpha lipoic acid unique is that it functions in water and fat, unlike the more common antioxidants vitamins C and E, and it appears to be able to recycle antioxidants such as vitamin C and glutathione after they have been used up.

I am very careful about my supplementation and I have looked into a few other supplements. I have read that inositol can help prevent Parnate poop out and effectiveness. I haven't looked at any studies yet.

-Scott, have you heard the same thing?
-Have you ever used inositol?
-Have you ever had Parnate lose it's effectiveness for you?
-If so, what did you do?
-How long have you been on Parnate and at what dose?

I am also looking into the supplement SAM-e. Which can help with depression and is a methyl donor in the body. Some research, including multiple clinical trials, has indicated taking SAM-e on a regular basis may help fight depression, liver disease, and the pain of osteoarthritis. It donates its methyl group to choline, in the formation of creatine, carnitine, DNA, tRNA, norepinephrine, and other compounds. So far the reading I have done on it says it is contraindicated with Parnate. But I am not so sure. I did mention it to my pdoc and he says it should be fine.

Do you know if it can be used safely or not with Parnate?

I am finding out there is so many contradictions on Parnate (MAOI's) with the use of supplements and different meds. It is becoming irritating and frustrating. I need some reliable websites to go to. That don't give the generic, super conservative and wrong info. on the MAOI's.
So far, psychotropicals.com by Dr. Gillman seems reasonable and up to date. It helps to find a pdoc who has first hand knowledge and experience in administrating these drugs. Instead of webMD etc that go by the package inserts!

-You mentioned some other websites that might be beneficial?

-Also, are cliff bars with soy in them a
negative?
or soy protein pwds?

I can always switch to a rice protein pwd or whey, if that's okay?
Is yogurt with live active cultures okay?
I have read that it is on some sites but Of course, the sites like Drugs.com, say no yogurt, whatever!!!

I just bombarded you with a lot of questions and I don't like to hassle people. But I cannot find straight answers. It is driving me nuts!!!

Last thing, I am on day 6 at 30mg and from what I've read titration should be slow. These websites say optimal doses are between 30-60mg.
I realize every ones physiology is different and what is okay for some isn't for others. I just want some straight answers to basic, fundamental questions. MAOI's should be treated with great respect, but not as an archaic drug to be scared about!
