Regular doc thinks ADHD...

Posted by sheilac on July 23, 2012, at 15:24:32

Saw my regular doc today and everytime the subject comes up about my depression and then irritability she insists that it is ADHD. I told her that Adderall gave me anxiety. She said I just needed a higher dose. She also said I should take 100mg of Zoloft a day to help with the depression and anxiety.

I told her the other doc suggested Lithium along with the Adderall. But she really doesn't think I am bipolar. She does think that I have issues with anxiety, depression and focus and attention.

I don't know what to think. Maybe 100mg of Zoloft could take the place of 4mg of Klonopin - I mean, how much Klonopin can a person take?!

But, I am afraid to stop the 600mg of Lithium at this point. I will add back the low dose Adderall and Zoloft.

Maybe Zoloft really will work for depression and anxiety?

Will Zoloft be bad with Adderll?

Wait, by "regular doc" do you mean a primary care physician or your regular psychiatrist? Did you have some sort of consultation? (Sorry, might have missed a thread or 2).

If it is a PCP, I would take anything she said with a HUGE grain of salt. PCP's are extremely poorly trained in psychiatric matters. Unfortunately, they tend to be very poor at recognizing their limitations and their arrogance can be very destructive.

Best,
EE

I don't see anything wrong with that plan, I think it looks good. But....it is the manner in which it is executed that will play a big role in success or failure. For example, you are right, you can't just stop lithium. You'll have to take everything in calculated steps, maybe lithium is weaned off first, weaned lower, kept the same for now, or whatever. If anxiety is an issue, ssri's can be very good for that but they also frequently make it worse in the first few days sometimes few weeks. What I'm trying to say is, shooting for 100mg is way too aggressive. Should start at 25mg and gently increase after stabilizing at each new dose. You might find for example that 50mg felt ok but 100mg was problematic. Or maybe vica versa. If you haven't tried ritalin, try it instead of adderall to see if it feels better.

I happen to think depression and ADHD share a lot in common. My doc has been telling me for years I have ADHD (because I respond well to ritalin) even though it looks like depression and I really don't have any attention problems. No matter, the names mean nothing, just a way for us to attempt some sort of organization to a bunch of different symptom clusters, all of which overlap and make the whole thing cloudy. No black and white.

Theo only thing I can say is to change any doses in small amounts and give plenty of time to stabilize at that dose before doing anything else.

i had a doc who told me anxiety is a sign of toxicity (taking too much) in the case of amphetamines. So taking more after complaining of anxiety with Adderall is pretty backwards.

If you have anxiety is the klonopin relieving you of this symptom? If so I would stay on it. As for ad's relieving anxiety they never have for me. Just the benzos. As for Adhd. Might call for a goodle search? Phillipa

Zoloft should help with depression and anxiety. It will not interact with the adderall.
