Does Wellbutrin make GAD worse?

Posted by SLS on July 20, 2012, at 6:58:35

Does anyone find that Wellbutrin makes their GAD worse?

Alternatively, has anyone found that Wellbutrin does NOT make their GAD worse?

If Wellbutrin were not to make GAD worse, it would make a good augmenter of SRIs when treating GAD in order to help with comorbid anergia, depression, and mitigate sexual side effects.

Thanks.

Can only speak for self took it low dose years ago for one week only. I saw my pdoc who felt I was hypomanic from it and hospitalized me and removed me from the med. I never thought I was hypomanic but despite benzos anxiety was definitely worse. Too stimulating fell or tripped over my dogs leash at the time on it too. Felt rushed. Phillipa

Scott,

I've tried Wellbutrin at various stages in the past and it always exacerbated things. I recently tried it with 20mg of Lexapro to augment the anti-depressant effect, and even at a low dose of 75 then 150mg, Wellbutrin made my anxiety worse. I stopped after five days. Any time I've tried it longer than 5 days, my anxiety spikes, and I get VERY irritable.

Hope that helps...

Hi Scott,

When I took Wellbutrin, it made my GAD worse. It was prescribed to me in addition to the citalopram I was given after a hospitalization. It's too bad because I know it was helping my depression, but it was just too stimulating for me. herpills

Hey b2c,

I'm not surprised; Wellbutrin seems to be either excellent as an AD for some, or horrible for others because it worsens anxiety--it's a very black and white drug in that respect (there's no in between). Another testament to how our unique makeup is crucial in considering the right psych meds (and sadly, seemingly ignored by many docs).

Curious: why did you stop taking it?

for me, yes. It was like downing a gallon of filter coffee I was so on edge. However I took it when I didn't know I had chronic OCD, GERD and IBS so I'm not your typical consumer...

For some, Wellbutrin does cause worsening of anxiety. I know it made mine worse.

scott...yea i've read various articles actually dr-bob has a post from over 10 years ago about taking wellbutrin and the significant anxiety it caused. It increases norepinehprine and dopamine at a lower extent....and also abouve 450mg it will increase electrical firing resulting in siezures.

It just depends how someone adapts to it. Bupropion is a weak form of methyphenidate.
