Ned Advice on GettingDisability

Posted by Avenarius on June 23, 2012, at 14:51:51

My sister's mental health is in steady decline. She's anxious, depressed, possibly bipolar, and is experiencing auditory hallucinations. She was hospitalized once for a few days. She has been unemployed (and underinsured) for 2 years.

Her doctors have not yet agreed to support her attempts to get disability. I know it's very difficult to get, but I know that at least one person on the board was successful.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Do we shop for a doctor who will cooperate? Do we find a lawyer now or wait until we find a doc who will say she deserves to be on disability?

We are in NY State.

If you know of any helpful resources (information or organizations, online orotherwise) please pass them on.

Thanks!

I filed a month ago so obviously no word yet. Your sister will have to get her doctor to fill out appointment dates going back a ways. They will not put much credence into whatever new doc will say. And they do want her records, diagnosis, etc.

I had to fill out 16 pages for a state agency that works with SS. Same stuff I filled out for SS. Sample question...
Do you own a pet?
Yes, a cat.
Who takes care of your pet?
I do.
What do you do for your pet?
Feed it, change litter.
Everyday?
F*ck*ng yes!!!

There were 8 pages of n depth job history and 8 pages of in depth personal life.
Sample question...
What do you do from the time you get up in the morning till when you go to sleep?
Uh, chase that big red spider?

It sucks. Just search SSDI or SSI(you must be broke to qualify) The government web sites are good but you'll have many resources out there.
