help with antipsychotics for anxiety

Posted by walid on June 22, 2012, at 15:28:31

here's my story please help me i was on a medication called flupenthixol for couple of moths . i improved but had some bad side effects: slight restlessness and some severe sedation from time to time. the doctor added procyclidine which helped in the beginning but i started having some vision disturbance : blurred vision and things seem nearer than normal so i stopped cold turkey. my dose was low : 2 mgs. after few days i started having the most extreme hellish restlessness known to men. life was hell and i couldn't sit still and i was so distraught and thinking everyday about suicide. about a month and a half later : yesterday to be more precise the psychiatrist insisted that i go back on flupenthixol 0.5mgs. i as so scared to take it and i explained that i worry about this restlessness but his secretary( a nurse ) told me the psychiatrist said i was most stable when i was taking flupenthixol so he thinks i need to take it. i took it and i felt musch better but this morning the restlessness came back and when it's there i feel burning in my neck and i feel i wanna die. please help me brothers and sisters

ps: flupenthixol is an antipsychotic used for depression and anxiety in small doses ( i am not psychotic)

I mean, what about a benzo? My concern would be that you might end up with more drug-induced problems, and possibly something permanent, like TD, all over a non-psychotic disorder.

Its easy for shrinks to say "take this" because...its not them, you know? Have you tried...benzos, hydroxyzine, buspar, buspar+an antidepressant, lyrica, neurontin? I just don't get this insistence that you take a neuroleptic for a non-psychotic disorder, when you clearly have problems tolerating the medication.

Therapy? Vitamins?

chris ! i already take clonazepam 0.5 bid. it's the only thing that helps a little. i think flupenthixol is the culprit in all my trauma. i took kit for couple of months and when i stopped it due to some side effects (vision problem and some restlessness) few days later hell broke loose. i never suffered like this in my life. a month and a half later my psychiatrist said : i was doing better on it and he put me on the smallest dose 0.5 once a day. I am not keen on it at all but he thinks it will help me because in england it's prescribed for anxiety and depression. he thinks i worry too much about side effects. i am a complete mess and i am very scared. i wanted him to prescribe lyrica or something else . sertraline doesn't seem to do anything at 100 mgs and i don't know why. all i do is smoke all day , i am smoking double what i used to and i can't help it.

philippa! i called them so many times and the psychiatrist himself called me yesterday and he suggested i stay on a low dose flupenthixol until my next appointment in three weeks time. i try to distract myself but it's very hard. i get this burning in the neck that makes my life a living hell and it's worse when i am restless. i cry everyday. i don't know what to do

I should elaborate.

Anti-psychotics are not first or even second-line treatments for anxiety. They are usually considered as a last resort after other safer, better tolerated and more rigorously studied treatments have failed. Moreover, they seem to be aggravating your condition.

Treatments for anxiety which have much better backing in the medical community include SSRIs, SNRIs, benzodiazepines and a type of psychotherapy called Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). CBT can be combined with medication or used by itself and is an evidence-based treatment proven to work for anxiety. In fact it causes the same structural improvements in the brain those caused by medication, for more info see http://www.psychiatrictimes.com/display/article/10168/1926705

CBT has not cured my anxiety but it has lessened its severity and made living with it easier. CBT is more likely to be carried out by a psychologist, although some psychiatrists do both psychotherapy and medication management. I still take medication.

That your doctor seems unwilling to even consider other classes of medication is both perplexing and alarming, unless there is more to the story that you aren't telling us. So, in summation, I would seriously recommend:

(1) seeing another psychiatrist for a second opinion
(2) looking into Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

To be clear, I'm not wholly against the prescribing of anti-psychotics off label. I've taken them myself. They do have a place, but not as a first-line treatment when there are far better options available.

I am begging them for CBT and they said they will offer me this soon(don't know how soon). i was stable before on some ssri and some amisulpride (low dose ) but had some issues , still i was able to go out and socialize3 and lead a near-mormal life. amisulpride makes me vomit a lot and gives me severe stomach discomfort. also it increases prolactin. i went to the psychiatrist and acted as if i was very poorly even though i was not that bad and he gave me flupenthixol instead of amisulpride. i felt better but started to have some severe sedation so he added procyclidine and this helped for few days but i started having extremely dry mouth and other visual symptoms. before i went to morocco on holiday i stopped the flupenthixol because of a bad episode of restlessness. the next two to three days i was fine and i visited a psychitrist in morocco and he he gave me anafranil. i took it at night and felt a bit better but next day hell broke loose: i could not sit still . neck burning , severe agitation and this lasted till now : restlessness subsided a bit but still there. severe anxiety and fear of everything to a point where i don't want to leave the house. weepy and extremely distraught. i bought a high dose of heroin and i am preparing myself for death if things get worse or don't get better. i can't live like this brother. i have a wife and a daughter (2.5 years old) and i worry about them. i don't know what happened : was it withdrawal from flupenthixol? did flupenthixol cause me brain damage? was it anafranil? even though i had it before with no problems apart from palpitations and sedation?? i am lost

walid,
You wrote, [...need help..any input..going through (great tribulation),,what shall (I) do?...].
It has been revealed to me that you are at a crossroad. Of the two roads, one leads to destruction and death, the other to life and peace.
There are many prohibitions made to me here by Mr.Hsiung that prevent me from posting here what I think could save your life, prevent you from getting a lfe-ruining condition and/or addiction.
One of those prohibitions involves the prohibition to me from posting the foundation of Judaism as revealed to me. So what I could post to you, if the prohibition was not made to me here, would come from a Jewish perspective which would involve the foundation of Judaism as revealed to me.
Another prohibition made to me here by Mr. Hsiung involves the historical facts involving the making of mind-altering drugs as to what they were used for and who made them. I started to post here about {benzene} and other chemicals as to the development of psychotropic drugs and was stopped by Mr.Hsiung as to that he made a prohibiton to me that I could not post about the use of drugs in mass-murder during a particular historical period and about the people that did such.
Now it is my great conviction that if you were allowed here to know these historical facts, facts that I think could mark the difference between a live person and a corpse, that I could answer your question as to what to do to be saved, This salvation that I am prohibited from posting here by the nature of many prohibitions made to me here by Mr. Hsiung, and that there are pages of outstanding requests from me to Mr. Hsiung that you can see on the administrative board here, is not by the works of the chemicals in mind-altering drugs, but by the renewing of your mind. You could email me by using the b-mail to get my address...

brothers and sisters

yesterday morning it was so hard. i took my tablets: 0.5 flupenthixol and 100 mgs sertraline but i vomitted 10 mins later. i was in such distress. so i took the tablets again as the GP said and withing an hour i felt a lot better. the as the day went i felt even better and by night i felt near-normal. i woke up this morning feeling a lot better then yesterday and i took my tablets. i went back to bed and i woke up with this burning in my neck again, this is one of the worst symptoms i was experiencing since my ordeal started. it makes feel hopeless and very distressed. i will try to go out like i did yesterday but i am a bit scared. i feel flupenthixol is definitely starting to do something but i am worried that this burning won't go away. any input brothers would be helpful . god bless you all

You are getting AKATHISIA from the flupenthixol. Akahisia is restlessness that can be caused by antipsychotics. It can be very severe. Propanolol and Artane can treat it.

i am getting better strangely enough. i was offered compazine for my nausea to take alongside my other medication but i didn't get it from the pharmacy as i am not ken on antipsychotics, the use of a very low dose flupenthixol(0.5mg) alone scares me a lot. my doctor thinks i am not being reasonable but i read so many horror stories about antipsychotics. thdd restlessness seemed to have diminished by 80% , i am still anxious and depressed but not crying everyday. i have some discomfort swallowing which bothers me and some dry mouth and i don't know if it's due to anxiety or medication i am taking: i am on flupenthixol and sertraline 100 mgs and clonazepam . any input would be appreciated
