I think I have made the switch...it would have been a while ago. And I have actually had pharmacies change from one generic to another. I didn't notice anything for me.

I personally haven't noticed any difference, but there are some cases in the literature where switching to a generic was bad for epileptic patients, e.g.

http://m.neurology.org/content/70/22_Part_2/2179.abstract
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/17346246/

Don't know if there are studies focusing on the use of generic lamotrigine in mood disorders vs. Lamictal.

It might interest you to read this spiel re. generics:

I think it's worth a try, just pay attention to any changes in mood and side effects. And maybe tell someone else what you're doing in case you don't pick up on any abnormalities.

I have taken two generics with no problem. The current one is made by Cadista which sounds more like an STD than a drug maker. I visited an epilepsy site and read where at least one person started having seizures when they went to generic.

I relapsed on both Teva and Mylan generics. Mylan was the worst. I was taking 500 mg in an effort to get it to work as well as 200 mg Lamictal, and it still wasn't enough. I understand that Dr. Reddy sucks. I haven't tried it myself, though.

For anyone who is having success with generic lamotrigine (Lamictal), what brand are you using?

Thanks.

I imagine it would effect those with seizures the most. So lamictal is now generic. I guess it has been for a while. Seems like yesterday that I tried it. Phillipa

It makes sense to try it because if it works it will save a lot of money. Sometimes the generics don't work as well as brand, once in a while work better than brand, but just sayin there have been many reports of deterioration of symptoms after switching to generic. There have been reports of switching to generic and everything was fine. So just keep an open mind and see what happens. Hopefully after a few weeks on the switch everything will be fine. And then someday in the future if the med starts to not work as well as it used to then maybe switch back to brand to see what happens before making any other decisions.

Just my thoughts.

I was on brand Lamictal before any generics came out. I was switched over to a generic, I have no idea who the manufacturer was, but they were shaped like two pyramids together? (I used to be good at math I'm sure there's a name for this!) Anyway, I did relapse. Now, whether that was because of the change to generic, there's really no way of knowing, at least in my view. I mean, I don't remember anything going on in my life at the time that would have aggravated my symptoms, so of course it is easy to point the finger to the generic. And maybe it was the generic, but how do we really know? I think more studies need to be done on the brand vs. generic thing. Or at least require that they are 99% or more of the same amount of active ingredient, not the huge window that it is (I can't find that NYT article at the moment, but there was a quote from a guy at the FDA saying how much different they can be and still get approved and I was shocked.)

I'm actually on GSK bridges to access program so I get my brand Lamictal for free, and I don't ever want to have to go generic again, in case that was the reason for the relapse. herpills
