My doctor says ginger and curcumin work synergistically with each other to help with inflammation (and he wants me on the fish oil, too).
I did read the book - http://www.amazon.com/dp/0982805209 and a good friend is waiting for it to come out for his Nook. It'll be cheaper that way.

The Wolfson book talks about the whole journey to wellness. It stresses individualizing medical and other care. Heck, the family even got a psychiatric service dog which was not needed after some years. The website suggests some other books such as for healing the gut and addressing other issues. Look for books under Treatment, Testing, and Stories in the Suggested Books tab for some ideas. I really liked the James Greenblatt book. A lot of people talk about the Bock and Stauth book but it was really hard for me.
One thing the It's Not Mental book made me wonder in my own case is the WHY. Why the inflammation? What kind of stressors do I have and how do I address all the different pieces. How is my sleep? What about toxins? What is my diet like? I really had a lot of inflammation. My intestines were not great. My skin was not great. My energy level wasn't great. I wondered about my endocrine system. The book is an easy read.

> http://itsnotmental.blogspot.com/2008/04/inflammation-of-body-and-brain.htmlThis post talks about what what I believe happened to me with allergies - Allergies, Asthma, and Mental Illness: http://itsnotmental.blogspot.com/2011/05/allergies-asthma-and-mental-illness.html
It is what the book talks about. Allergies really did a number on me. It causes cytokines which cause inflammation which can affect our whole body including our brain. Allergies can affect different organs differently in different people. In some, maybe the skin making hives or eczema, and in others more the intestines and others more the nose and others more the brain or the lungs.

Yes, how do you lower cytokines?
Obviously you try to avoid the thing to which you are allergic, but over and above that?

You lower the inflammatory response. Avoiding things that cause an immune, inflammatory response in us is huge, but so is figuring out WHAT is causing it! There are different types of allergic reactions and we can get the skin scratch tests or blood tests and even other types!
I did change my diet.
There is more, though. My doctor said there were supplements to take to lower inflammatory responses such as curcumin plus ginger. There is boswellia. Oh, and even high quality fish oil combined with antioxidants.
There are common things we do which increase inflammation, like our greasy, processed "normal" diet, at least that's how I used to eat. I ate a lot of crappy food.
Did you read that study about even aspirin helping reduce symptoms of schizophrenia in some people because it lowers cytokines? It supposedly helped because it lowered inflammation.

I think there is definitely something to the idea that inflammation is related to mental illness.
My allergies kicked in about the same time as my depression. Ive had issues with my immune system in other ways as well. I have enlarged lymph nodes minus any obvious infection (auto-immune?) and fatigue/pain.
I do better on desipramine (pain relief, energy and I could actually smell things again!) and large doses of supplements like NAC, B-12, C and chromium.
This is the end of the thread.
