Never believe bipolar unless you diagnosed it.

For the life of me, I can't imagine why anyone would want to get admitted to a psych unit unless they felt utterly out of control. For anyone firmly connected to reality, they are the least helpful, and probably most harmful places on the planet.

There are some very scary and harmful hospitals where you can be abused by doctors/nurses and other patients. There are also some really good ones. I have experienced both. While I'd prefer not to have to go (who wants to be in ANY hospital, psych or not!), if I need to be in hospital I am ok with going to the hospital where I feel safe, I have my usual psychiatrist, and I know the staff aren't going to take out their frustration and anger on me or other patients.

I spent 4 days in one and loved it. LOL Everyone was cool...staff, patients. I loved the psychiatrist, a lady well up in her 60s.

I was bitching to her about what a disaster my apt was and how I'd been an utter failure at changing that. A few days later I walked up to her and she didn't look at me but said, a man needs a maid. Who sang that Phil? I said, Neil Young I think.
She kind of tilted her head back, grinned and walked off. LOL

It always scares me a bit to read the thought processes of providers.

Yeah, that's a scary little article. Besides all of the decisions these people have to make the line about don't believe bipolar unless you diagnosed it did not sit well with me.

Also, if a patient doesn't have money just give them the old anti psychotics.

Still, I wouldn't want anywhere close to that job.

Lots of interesting stuff plus they have pharmacist and psychologist forums.

Hi Dinah!!

Anyone else feel a little sneaky reading this forum? Like you're reading your sister's diary or raiding your parents' favourite hiding place for Christmas presents?

Agree. Reading that thread you clearly can see how these people are already forming opinions and attitudes toward psych patients. Absolute arrogance.

Good point about bipolar, though. Way overdiagnosed.

Hi Phil!

I must admit that as much as I complain about bad doctors, it is a job I wouldn't want for myself. As my husband frequently reminds me when my OCD is centering on my work, at least people aren't likely to die if I make a mistake. That's way too much power for me, and I suppose it does take an adjustment in thinking (or a "healthy" amount of narcissism) to feel capable of that responsibility.

It's a tough gig. Psychiatry is hard because so much of it is gray area:). You have to figure out what's in front of you and that's not easy. Not counting all the grief they get from patients..some justified, some not. And psychiatrists make somewhere in the neighborhood of $155000. A lot of money to me but I know retail district managers that make that much. Dermatologists, $300,000+ Family doc, same as shrinks.

When I sold furniture we had a respected surgeon that was a good customer. It wasn't unusual for him to get a call while shopping. I'd listen to him spitting out highly technical details of what to do with the patient. One night he bought a glass table and we dropped it in the parking lot(bad move but it happened) He leaned over to help us pick up the metal parts! We of course said, no doc we got it.
So yes, there are some very good people in medicine.
I can't seem to write a short post these days.
My PCP teaches meditation several nights a week to patients. Welcome to Austin.

Dinah OCD is considered a good thing in Nursing and for Doctors. As to make a mistake could be fatal to a patient. I guess that's why I was if I say so myself a great RN. Now some of the others definitely were not and same with Docs. They expected us to find their mistakes. Usually did too. At least I did. And boy call a doc at night or when he's busy not good. But the pdocs expect to be called. They are the best in this reguard. Phillipa
