Don't take meds

Posted by newo38 on May 5, 2012, at 14:49:44

I have been on ssri's or ssri's or 12 years. I recently tried to stop and I can't. I KNOW that once you are on these drugs, your brain can;t function at the same level without them. I Know it. If you aren't on meds yet or you havent been on them for long do not go on them. They are used to avoid coping with life but they are poor substitute.

newo38,
You wrote the above.
I am also here trying to educate people about how mind-altering drugs could cause death or a life-ruining condition or addiction. I am also trying to help people to overcome depression and addiction.
But there are prohibitions to me here from Mr. Hsiung that prohibit me from posting what IMHHHHO could save lives and prevent people from getting a life-ruining condition or addiction so that I appreciate people like you posting here what you have. Maybe you could post here what could educate people about mind-altering drugs that you know is fact in order to help people make a more-informed decision as to take these drugs or not?
If you could look at the administrative board going back days, weeks, months and years, you will see outstanding requests from me to the administration. I think that as long as those requests from me remain outstanding, that deaths and life-ruining conditions and addiction could happen whereas if they were not outstanding, IMHO there could be some lives saved or some people that would not get a life-ruiing conditon or addiction.
Maybe you could show those posts by me that are outstanding to someone else, also. You see, I think that your post here could save lives, could prevent some others from getting a life-ruining condition and/or addiction. I think that is constructive and supportive and educational and a great concern for humanity itself. With effots like yours, others could make a more-informed decision as to take mind-altering drugs or not, like the mothers and the fathers that get linked to this site in a search to make a decision to put their child on drugs that could kill them or give them a life-ruining condition or addiction. And the parents might also be on these drugs and want to be made free from them. They could see your posts and I think that's good, thanks.
Lou

Might be true? Same amount of time here low doses thought and don't work. At least I don't think they do? Phillipa

Why can't you stop them? Instead of ever starting them what could you have done at the time to help your depression? Do you have brain damage or are you still depressed?

I'm not being accusatory because these issues are everywhere on the web.

I don't talk to many people on SSRI's but I've been on all of them. I don't think that there was any brain damage but I did think they sucked.

I have to wonder why Mike Wallace, one of the smartest and best news guys ever, before his death would say he had been on Zoloft for nine years and loved it. He was in his 70's and was sharper than ever.

I hope they get it sorted out soon because brain damage is obviously not good.

So while many people are claiming brain damage, it evidently isn't an issue with everyone.

I think overuse of meds is a bad call. Too many people are on too many meds for issues that shouldn't be handled by psychiatrists.

BUT, I will say that there are some people with more severe depression who have great responses to SSRI and other antidepressant drugs. I had a good response to 20mgs/celexa on top of my usual 30mgs/Abilify for an episode of severe, psychotic depression. I quit after 6 months though, once the worst of the episode had resolved and the sides from the celexa (apathy, laziness) were more trouble than the ongoing benefits (mild anti-anxiety effects, mostly).

I think its ill advised to stay on an ssri, no questions asked, for years and years and years. Depressive episodes--even severe ones, like psychotic depression--often resolve without any treatment, so I don't think it makes sense to kepe somebody on something that basically amounts to emotional novocaine w/o periodically assessing their need for ongoing treatment.

And when you think about it, you didn't start to take meds because your brain was functioning perfectly.

I guess but doesn't it make logical sense that if I use pills to regulate brain chemistry that the brain will stop doing it? Like a muscle that is never used. That is my fear.

Well I don't know, but there are many people who have taken ADs (esp. tricyclics) for several decades, and they seem to do fine. And I don't need my brain for a thousand years, a few decades more (hopefully) and I'm done with it :)

Someone with way more knowledge than I possess will have to answer that one. But I have been reading a lot since that post and many say SSRI's are better for short term use.

I guess in a perfect world, all psych meds should be short term.

And untreated mental illness seriously alters and damages brain chemistry and function also.

Is suicidal depression or a manic/psychotic state preferable to trying to get better?

If only they could see and determine what a person may or may not need. That would solve the problem Phillipa

I bet if you made it past the withdrawal effects of whatever you're on, you might find you can cope with life without it.
