Celexa--hairloss??

Posted by BetweenDreams81 on May 2, 2012, at 16:41:55

Ok, so I just started Celexa about a week ago...started off at 10mg/day for a week, and now up to 20mg/day taken in the morning. I'm also on 600mg Lithium, and up to 1.5 mg Clonazepam (usually between 0.5-1 mg/day)

I never noticed any hairloss before taking Celexa, but now that it has been added to the mix I feel like a LOT of hair is dropping out as I brush and blow dry it after taking a shower.

Has anyone else had this symptom? Is this common for Celexa? I'm getting biotin and a few other vitamins tonight to help battle it. If this truly is an issue, I cannot continue with this med.

All observations and experiences much appreciated!

I did not have that particular side effect. Good luck with the Biotin. Is there anything else why this could be?

It's weird isn't it?? Maybe I'm being paranoid...but I really feel like a ton of hair is 'shedding' out when combing my fingers through it and then brushing it while blow drying...I've been cleaning the brush out each time to see how much comes out...it's just a ton more than I ever remember seeing. Could it be the combo with lithium? Doesn't lithium have a warning for hairloss?

i had this issue with pristiq. i've been on it for a couple years now but i think this side-effect lasted for what seemed like a year. it wasnt a huge issue for me as i have very thick hair and normally have to thin it out.
However, i did mention to pdoc and he had told me if it became a problem to take centrum silver, as there was a study that showed it helped those on depakote that had hair loss.

Oh dear! that pic of hairloss is absolutely frightening!

I just got out of the shower and dried my hair etc, and counted the hairs as they appeared on my hands and in the brush...it was right around 90 hairs! I know that the scale says normal hairloss is between 40-120/day, but I have rather fine flat hair to begin with. I'm hoping it subsides as I start taking a mutivitamin with iron and supplement with biotin. I may even staart Rogaine or some other type of shampoo as a precaution (can't hurt!) Maybe just an adjustment to the Celexa?

I don't want to be too premature in saying this for fear of slashed hopes, but I do feel like the Celexa is bringing back a sense of normalcy and not so robotic emotions, or the desire to stay in bed all day...so I do want to give it a fair trial despite possible side effect.

Sounded to me like it stops after a while the hair loss. Hang in there. You could get a perm like I have for extra fullness if needed? Phillipa
