switching from clonazepam back to ativan

Posted by KarenRB53 on April 21, 2012, at 19:25:19

Mr pdoc switched me from ativan to clonazepam about 6 months ago. I've been taking clonazepam 0.5 2x daily and 1mg ativan at night for sleep. I haven't felt well since I started clonazepam but wanted to give it a fair trial. My question is do I need to taper off clonazepam and increase ativan or can I just stop clonazepam and go back to ativan only?

Thanks

karen-

don't know the answer to your question, but i have a question for you;

in what ways did/does clonazepam make you feel unwell?

thanks for any input. i'm on klonopin and am curious as to what your experience is.

thanks.

I'm sorry for not replying to your post. I simply don't know the answer to your question. Perhaps a cross-titration is best. Clonazepam does a few things pharmacologically that Ativan does not. Some of these things involve serotonin. It might be better to wean off of the clonazepam gradually as you increase the Ativan. What does your doctor recommend?

I am also interested to know in what ways clonazepam affects you in a negative manner. For me, clonazepam causes me to become moderately more depressed. It feels disgusting to me. By comparison, I find Ativan to be very "clean" with no negative effects on mood or cognition.

Thats how clonazepam makes me feel...more depressed and spacey. My pdoc said because I was mostly on .05mg once daily that I could just switch. But I've been doing what you mentioned..taking less of clonazepam and more of ativan. Only been 5 days.
Ativan has always worked for me and its only because of the longer half life dr wanted me to try it.

Karen immediatedly made me feel suicidal and didn't feel that way called the pdoc and he talked outloud to himself and said it must be the klonopin. Then said to me go off it the klonopin and resume xanax. One dose of it and was fine. Phillipa

I would cross taper both drugs.

I've been trying to do that. I'm down to 1/2 of .05mg and have been for about 3 wks and increased the lorazepam to 1/2mg in the morning when I take the clonazepam and I still take the 1 mg lorazepam at night. Last night I had maybe 3 hrs sleep and am wondering if its because of the low dose of clonazepam.

I don't know if it would be-I've used both Clonazepam and Ativan for sleep issues.
