How many people here Exercise?

Posted by huxley on April 17, 2012, at 6:08:32

As a form of treatment and do you find it effective?

An interesting story. I got off all my meds.
Pristiq, Lactimal, Zyprexa, Provigil.

I get up and exercise every morning at 6 oclock for an hour and eat healthily.

On drugs I would rate my mwntal state as 1/10. Would have been happy to die.

Now off everything, 2 years later I would rate it 6-7 out of 10. I am always prone to depression and anxiety but I believe my lifestyle keeps it at bay and I manage it.

Infact I would rate it higher if it wasn't for the long term damage that I believe (cant prove) these meds have done to me.

Not preaching to you for those that meds do work. I'm sure that what works for me does not work for everyone. But Something to keep in mind.

My Meds were in fact making my life horrible.

That is great that you are feeling decent. Unfortunately, vigorous exercise and clean living never put even a tiny dent in my depression. My brother says it's the same for him. I do it for the many other benefits, though. On the plus side, my meds are helpful.

i used to feel that euphoria you get from exercise, before i ever took psych meds. When on them,i didnt feel it.That was one reason i tapered off zoloft and remeron.I so badly missed it.I used exercise for many years and it worked to ward off anxiety, depression. But the last episode i had,it didnt work, thus I had to go on meds, which did work. Now that Im down to klonopin only,i can feel relaxed after exercise, but not the euphoria.Ive tried to get off k to see if I could just rely on exercise again.Well, you can imagine how that goes.I dont get very far with the taper. But I love to move, always have.Exercise gives me control, relief,a rhythm, a reason.

I've only gotten off of meds once over the past three decades. I was doing well for a while exercising and trying to eat right.
I would drive to a hike and bike trail and jog 3-4 miles maybe 4 times a week. I was losing weight and felt good.
Then things started to gradually get worse. I felt myself slowly getting more tired each day till it got to the point that I couldn't get out of my car.
I went back on meds.
Why exercise and diet are enough for some and not others is a mystery I guess.
I'm always happy to hear that people can get by without pills. I wish that I was one of them.

yes. part of my problem now is i'm not exercising as much as i was last year.
i was able to maintain with minimal meds while exercising 5-6 days a week.

but then depression worsened started on meds that make very tired. hard to get up so cant exercise in morning. no time at night.

i NEED to get back exercising. but i need to give myself some time to feeling a bit better too.

its a tight balance that i cant shake up too much.

i do miss it.
and cant wait to get back.

Excercise was more than a "Happy Pill" for me for decades. I was younger no aches and pains and jogged daily and taught Aerobic Dance. I would go out for only a two mile jog and if had a problem about 20 minutes later after the jog the answer would be there. I am only able to bike ride now but I do ride 6 miles up and down hills in the evening. Despite back and leg pain when riding the sense of freedom and being in control is overwhelming. So for me excercise definitely worked. Til started SSRI's now got me thinking as it doesn't seem as much fun? But without it I may as well lay down and die. Phillipa

I do. I get a runner's high sometimes. It's usually the only time I feel good all day. It doesnt do anything except for the actual time I'm running. Other than that I'm suicidal. I've been suicidal during marathon training--80+ miles per week.

I'm all for being healthy but people overrate exercise. It is not a cure for serious mental illness.

Exercise, especially daily intense cardio is by far the best thing I have ever "used" for depression and mood, better then the million anti depressants I've tried. Unfortunately I found it only mildly helpful for anxiety, but being in a much better mood and not experiencing depression does help with anxiety in an indirect way. I would rate it a 8/10 for depression and better them any medication I've taken, but for anxiety only about a 5 or 6 outta 10. I definatly think anyone with depression and/or anxiety should be exercising daily

Exercise (which I now get too little of) never helped me with depression. I would swim and cry. Walk and cry. Finally, I went into a vegetative state and didn't get out of bed for almost three months. When I started on parnate, after 48 hours, I got up and started pedaling on the stationary bike they had at the hospital.

I exercise and have always just about. Went off my meds a few times and it never helps. I went throught a stage were I exercised almost every day at the gym and was on reduced meds I was still crazy. The exercise does help. I take meds too. But exercise is not a substitute for me.

First to me marathon training is just too intense. I feel about an hour a day is what works best. And if on meds just helps me take less or used to when running. Only a couple miles a day though

Not now, but I have had periods of time when I exercised frequently, and I definitely felt better. Exercise is a big part of my get off meds strategy.
Nothing really takes the edge off for me like exercise.

I couldn't agree with you more. I have been an athlete all of my life. I rowed at University for 4 years, then coached rowing (while rowing 2 times a day), taught spin cycling and ran about 6 miles a day. While exercise is phenomenal and should be a part of everyone's life if it is possible, it is not by any means a sole way of treating serious mental illness. Absolutely nothing stopped my clinical depression and ocd constantly hitting me until I found a med that helped. It has been quite a journey and I am still tweaking my meds/supplements and doing exercise. I think it is a bit naive to think that what works for one will work for everyone else.

This has been my experience as well. Exercise has been a crucial element to my staying off meds, psychologists/psychiatrists and keeping my sanity. I'm currently endurance training and I haven't felt so alive in years.

The key to keeping my crippling depression and anxiety at bay is an intense exercise program where I'm required to focus all of myself into the activity (physical, mental and emotional) to stay competitive with my training group. The less intense forms of exercise (i.e. walking, yoga, etc.) is good but not as effective as endurance exercise, I've found.

I'm nowhere near 100 percent, but living moments where I can truly connect with my precious child in a real way...sharing in her joys and victories, and supporting her in disappointments is worth everything to me. And I'm very grateful to have found something which allows me to be there for her and guide her through life. I know that exercise is not the answer for everyone but it's been a godsend for my mental and physical well being.

I exercise, not as much as I used to, but I exercise. I find that exercise makes EVERYTHING better, not just mental but my sleep apnea, blood pressure, EVERYTHING.

I find if I exercise aerobically hard six days a week for a month or more, my mood improves quite a bit and my antidepressant works a lot better.

I find when I lose weight, my sleep apnea improves and my mood/mental status improves.

So yeah, aerobic exercise, especially regular and intense aerobic exercise, it definitely is an antidepressant/anti-anxiety tool.

I would argue even that intense aerobic exercise is even a mild anti-psychotic!!! I am serious.

I am the same LBinNC.

I just wish a doctor tried this with me before what I equate to ruining 10 years of my life with medications.

Does anyone have any idea about why it helps some of us so much?
