why did my doc prescribe high doses of ketamine

Posted by poser938 on April 2, 2012, at 18:56:31

I've been thinking of calling my pdoc's office, because all i've read about is how "low dose ketamine" helps with depression. doses at around 0.5mgs per kg of body weight, or even lower. but my doc prescribed 100 to 200 mgs of the nasal spray, and all it does is make me dizzy and knock me out at when i take it before bed. and he prescribed it to be taken every night and then i have another appointment with him in about a week.

i have read all about how low doses of ketamine, around 35mgs for my body weight, in a single dose can knock out depression for a week. I'm confused as to why he has me taking so much ore than that.

I, too, was surprised by the amount of ketamine your doctor prescribed. Is it possible that it takes more medication when used intranasally as compared to i.v.? Perhaps he has access to more recent literature regarding the use of ketamine in depression. Of course, he may be mistaken.

Please let us know. I hope ketamine works for you.

Contact the doc and ask him. Can or should you use less til you see him again? Phillipa

well i'm going to call him today.
i could probanly use less of it. i figured out i could squirt the normal 50mgs that comes out into the tube that caps the bottle, and then maybe barely press the put the sprayer thing into the ketamine, and just take it that way. but, i think it might be best to see if the doc can give to me in a measured dose and maybe start at 0.1mg per kg of my weight and then move the dose higher if needed.

i'll just call him about it today.

That would seem to be the way to go. However, it may be that your doctor is ahead of us on the curve and knows more than we do - as unthinkable as that may be. :-)

I understand your mode of thinking because it's how I too sometimes think, but I don't think the answers lie in whether you take 50mg or 100mg. I've read reports of people suffering from depression who used ketamine recreationally, i.e. at doses far exceeding 100mg IN, and they got a strong antidepressant effect from it.

Of course, this doesn't mean that this is the case for everybody, and going to 50mg is a good idea in my opinion, but I think it's somewhat unlikely that this will be the answer you are hoping for.

I'm sorry if that's not what you want to hear... hang in there...

i just got off the phone with the nurse and she basically just said that he is trying the doses that he has had most success with. i doubt she talked to the doc , though. but i'd say she's right about his idea with the higher doses.
i'm not feeling too well today, and im just tempted to try a low dose tonight.. and just cross my fingers and hope it does something good for me.

here is a site that i like explaining some of the differences that high, medium and low doses of ketamine have.

http://www.jneurosci.org/content/17/8/2921.full

... i'm having a feeling that if my doctor is against the idea of low doses of it, that he will basically tell me i have no idea what i'm talking about if i bring it up to him.

i just wish i could have 25mgs of ketamine measured out in a needle and injected. i feel uneasy about the nasal spray. alot of times when i spray it, it feels like half of it goes in mouth to the back of my tongue, since the nose and mouth are connected.
