TMS Dr Oz

Posted by bleauberry on March 15, 2012, at 4:20:33

So Dr Oz highlighted TMS for depression yesterday on his show. He seemed to like it, despite it is still new, revolutionary, and controversial. Even had a live demonstration of it. Quick, painless. The guest Dr who administers the procedure said they go for remission, not just response. Didn't say what the percentage success rate was though. Apparently the reason it isn't more popular is because of the cost, and insurance doesn't cover it until after the fact? I didn't quite understand that part.

Anyway, stimulating the prefrontal cortex (mood center) with magnetic energy waves.....makes sense to me.

I wonder how much it costs?

Insurance companies very often will not cover a treatment that hasn't already been approved by Medicare, despite its approval by the FDA.

Are you saying medicaire sets the standards for what private insurance companies will pay for? Phillipa

In some cases, yes.

This is a good start:

I found this online:

Sessions cost $350 to $600 depending on the area of the country you live in. This puts the cost of Sacramento TMS treatment between $7000 and $12000 depending on the number of sessions required to treat your depression. On average most individuals require 20 to 30 sessions in the acute phase of treatment.

Just went through a successful course of TMS myself (search he boards for my recent posts on it). Cost was $2000 per week for 3 weeks. I am in the midwest. Costs more on the west coast. My doc has treated about 80 patients so far and has only been successful in getting insuarce to pay once. You can use a health savings acct though.

It's funny that Oz said it was controversial...in my understanding the controversial part is really the cost. It is a low side effect, low risk procedure. There is a chance it won't work and you will be aout a lot of $.

Neurostar is the company who provides machines for the US market. Check out their website for more of the basics.

yah, i dont really see anything controversial about TMS. i had it done a bit over a month ago, i didnt respond to it at all, but thank god i didn't have any negative effects from it. i have read many reports on people saying it helped them tremendously. and it is definitely a hell of a lot less risky that ECT aka hooking your brain up to an electrical outlet.

Well, as far as Dr. Oz saying it was controversial; it's TV. Actually he made it sound more controversial than his previous show on ECT, he made that sound wonderful and pretty much discounted the risks. Of course everything Dr. Oz does is to make money, if anyone took a fraction of the number of supplements he recommends they wouldn't have any money in their bank account OR
any room in their digestive system for any food. I am sure the rTMS show was sponsored by the company that makes the equipment for it. And what a lie that it's painless. IT HURTS!!!! Cecilia
