Why does the zyprexa not work all the time?

Posted by Zyprexa on November 8, 2011, at 22:52:57

Works just fine most days. Its just once or twice a month or so it seems like I didn't even take it the night before. But I know I did. I can tell because I have realy bad days. Where I feel like complete crap. Its like some one is sliping me a placebo. Is that paranoid thinking or what?

Not necessarily so. You went down on the wellbutrin could that be part of it? Phillipa

In what ways do you feel worse during these brief episodes?

> Feel sad and depressed.

Is there a particular theme or event associated with your sadness? How can you be sure that these brief depressions are biological rather than psychological or emotional?

When my system is free-running and untreated, I experience brief periods of worsening of depression that last for three days. They occur every few weeks. Perhaps there is a cyclicity to your illness that manifests as monthly episodes of depression. On the other hand, you might be slightly underdosed on your medication, which might lead to breakthrough depression, especially during times of stress.

AAPs are used as mood stabilizers a lot but I dont think theyre really as effective as the AEDs.
Are you on any stabilizers? Maybe these are actually breakthrough depressive swings?

Any theme you dwell on? Like I will dwell on the weather which I know I can't control but want to. What does your doc say? Oh did you see yet? Phillipa

I never had this problem with the zyprexa not always working before taking the abilify 4 years ago. After 6 months on abilify and back on high doses of zyprexa it didn't work well at all. Slowly got better over the years but still having the ocasional problems. I'm not convinced that I shouldn't go back up on the zyprexa. Atleast to 10mg or something. I'm on 5mg now. Was on 15mg for the last 3 years along with the perphenazine. Before the perphenazine I was taking between 10mg and 50mg zyprexa. And it seemed to barely work anymore. Man that abilify realy messed me up.

I took depakote and lamictal in the past. Neither one seemed to do anything good. so I just stoped them after 1 year, other 5 months.

I think the zyprexa and perphenazine realy help and would not like to change them now. Maybe just doses.

Maybe its stress breaking through? I mean, I take 15 Abilify and 200 Lamictal, and I still have breakthrough problems. I had breakthrough problems at 30 Abilify, too, so I don't think I need an increase in the antipsychotic.

Some people (I want to say 30%, not sure though) don't even respond to antipsychotics. I mean, I'm sure they experience sedation and what not, but the voices and core symptoms don't get any better. Then some people experience "poop out" where the antipsychotic stops working. For me, I always try to remember that there's really no indication that the dopamine blockers are "fixing" anything; its all about suppressing symptoms with as few side-effects as possible.

So, maybe its breakthrough stress. Or maybe you just have problems that won't respond entirely to an antipsychotic all of the time. It could also have something to do with your recent reduction in antipsychotic dosage. Your brain adapt to antipsychotics (and other psychiatric meds), so it makes sense that with a dosage reduction you might have some problems for while, during which time your brain is simply adjusting to reduced sedation and D2 blockade. Also, wellbutrin can cause some problems--increased psychosis, agitation, anxiety--that antipsychotics are used to treat. Maybe when you drop the wellbutrin you'll get more consistent results from the zyprexa?

Did you discontinue Zyprexa during the time you took Abilify?

I think Zyprexa and Nardil would make a good combination for depression and anxiety disorders. Unfortunately, the potential for unacceptable weight gain and diabetes would be high.

Just back from doc and back up to 10mg zyprexa. But this time its going to be generic! Hope its a good one.

I didn't totaly discontinue zyprexa on abilify. Think the lowest I went was 3.75mg zyprexa. So it was a reduced zyprexa the whole time. The weird thing was it happened all of a sudden half way through the abilify trial when the zyprexa seemed to stop working.

Doc said she was going to put me on effexor and replace zoloft. What can you tell me about venlafaxin? Not sure if its going to be er or not. Said its in capsule.

I have the exact problem. I used to feel the sedation it gave and the thought reorginazation it gave and now it doesnt do anything. It's a tolerance to medication im very sure. I take 20mg. For a while i was on 30mg and it made me jerk and and studder. Now when I take anything above 20mg it doesnt do anything. It's a immunity to the medication, that's the only thing I can think of that im going through too also.

zyprexa is working realy good now!

I was on 5mg for just over a month. And now I'm back up to 10mg and I can realy tell its working. Almost as good as before the abilify. This is great!

Great for you Zyprexa!
this last time too i again notice that 10 is my magic number. i was at 5 for a week and not much of anything almost 24/48 hours at 10 and i noticed a difference.
even my pdoc noted such a big change in my persona since being on 10 for a week.
i think he got to see the best of me that day. 1)it was in the am and i'm almost Always better in the morning, 2)right after exercize and always feel better right after exercize and 3)i took a shower and was dressed pretty. :)

anyway. i'm glad you found your magic number.
btw did you say you take something to counteract any weight gain?

b2c.

No I don't take anything for weight gain. Just wellbutrin, and perphenazine. I've actualy lost 5 lb since the increase of zyprexa and wellbutrin. But then I also went to the gym for the first time in 2 months.

Do you still take perphenazine? How is that working?

Great for you and the gym. keep it up.

ya still taking perphenazine, 4 at night and 2mg in am. thats working very well for anxiety for the most part. i still have peakslike now :)
i must say, even though with kids holidays have gotten better but they are stillreally..tough for me emotionally.
Very stressful. (as i'm sure is for most posters here)
i stopped taking zyprexa last week cuz i did gain. (though i let myself eat like a pig so i can't all blame the med). but now i'm STILL eating bad, off zyprexa AND feeling like crap.
i have bad anxiety AND i'm a relentless sad sack.
i can't seem to do anything right. ANd i can't fit into my new jeans (all 4 pair) that i just bought!
i mostly stopped cuz i couldn't get up in the morning to get to the gym and i don't have time in evening. and i missed my morning routine something fierce.

but now i'm regretting it.
i WANT to be good for the holidays. butugh. i don't know. i can't seem to make up my mind. each day i say that night i will start up with zyprexa again. then at night i don't want to cuz i want to wake up and do exercise in the morning
i WISH they could tweak zyprexa.
i don't even wish for it to be a weight loser! just be weight neutral and make it easier to get up in the morning! i had started taking it a about 5:30pm so that i could wake up in am but that still didn't help.

man. am i still talking.
sorry. to go on.
later zyprexa.
