viibryd increased anxiety

Posted by markwell on October 15, 2011, at 17:36:28

Day 8 of viibryd and my anxiety is still really bad.
I'm supposed to be at 20 mgs by now but I'm afraid it will increase my anxiety. I had a lot of anxiety before the viibryd so I don't know if raising the dose will help or hurt? Can any viibryd users chime in? Thanks
Mark

It's up to you to stick with it to find out if it helps or not. The anxiety will probably abate with time, but there is no guarantee. It was too much for me to handle and I had to stop it at day 10 (I never went up to 20mg, I was on 4mg/day of clonazepam and still could not handle the anxiety of 10mg). I would talk to your doctor about this. To give it a fair shot, you need to be on it 4-6 weeks. I just couldn't handle it.

Plus, I've always had better results with MAOIs; do note that I am using these drugs primarily for social phobia. What I do best on is MAOI + psychostimulant (60mg/day d-amphetamine).

I'm done with SSRI-type drugs. I've taken them for years in the past and never got much benefit.

Chairman you also tried viibryd? Sounds like better for severe depression than anxiety for sure. I'd thought about trying it but sounds like a no go at this point. Phillipa

I don't respond to drugs the way a lot of people do and have quite an affinity for MAOIs, so perhaps my experience is not the best to go on.

If you have marked anxiety, mirtazapine (Remeron/Avanza) might be a good one to try.....15mg at night for 2 nights, then 30mg at night

I liked Remeron, but it made my rls worse, even with klonopin on board, now zoloft is really making my legs jumpy, at night only.

Are you suggesting to replace it with Remeron or to add it to Viibryd?

Just curious.

That would be a very interesting combination.

I'm curious, too.

Will going from 10mgs to 20mgs help or hurt with anxiety? Will I notice less depression or do I need to get to the 40mgs to notice that? What I'm basically saying is that at some point with an antidepressant it starts to work on the symptoms that I was originally was taking it for. Do I sit at this dose and wait for the symptoms to calm down or do I take a larger dose? Sorry for the ramble but I am stuck.

It is very difficult to predict how someone else will respond to a medication. I think it is a reasonable action to continue taking Viibryd and increase the dosage to see how you react to it. If the anxiety becomes intolerable for you, you can always reduce the dosage or discontinue it entirely. It might not get worse with increased dosage. For me, anxiety appeared at 20mg after taking it for less than two weeks. I still have some slight anxiety at 40mg, but it has subsided quite a bit. However, I would not characterize it as being severe at any point.

What do you experiencing as anxiety?

Scott, my anxiety is experienced as racing thoughts and the inability to sit still. A lot of tension. I think I will go to twenty myself and see what happens. Thanks for the advice Scott.

Odds are that what you are experiencing is simply anxiety produced by Viibryd as a side effect. However, one should look out for akathisia or a manic reaction when taking SRIs.

Any bipolar stuff going on? Family history? Racing thoughts and anxiety/tension can be symptoms of a bipolar spectrum disorder.

Do you find yourself rocking back and forth, bending at the waist when you try to sit down? Do you find yourself pacing? When standing, do you shift your feet from one foot to the other? These things indicate akathisia, especially when one feels as if they are "crawling out of their skin".

I don't want to scare you or discourage you from taking Viibryd. I just thought that you should have this information.

Scott, I do have bipolar 1. I am on a mood stabilizer, tegretol. I always have the racing thoughts but they are more pronounced with the viibryd. Do you think eventually for you viibryd will have an anti anxiety value?

Sorry I missed your post to me...

It is difficult to know if your racing thoughts as you describe them are due to anxiety or are an indicator of a manic reaction.

> Do you think eventually for you viibryd will have an anti anxiety value?

I guess it is possible. The anxiety produced by Viibryd has disappeared. I am less than 4 weeks into treatment. Since anxiety is not (no longer) a part of my illness, I can't really answer your question.

How are you sleeping?

Scott, I'm day 4 of viibryd. The anxiety I'm experiencing has really gotten much worse last day or two. I feel like I'm crawling out of my skin. I know it's not mania. I have no patience and every little thing gets me angry and frustrated. My pdoc suggests this will be the last try at an ssri. I want to continue to try this but I'm so wadded up.
My sleep is horrible. I wake at 2:30 or so and can't go back to sleep. This is somewhat typical for me with or without trying a new ad. I find it so difficult to work or function at all. Sorry for rambling but I'm a mess.

That sounds intense.

Akathisia?

Do you find yourself unable to sit still? Do you rock back and forth while sitting? Do you pace? While standing, do your constantly shift your weight from one foot to the other?

Viibryd did this to me in a way that no other drug ever has. I've only been given a typical antipsychotic once, and it was administered with lorazepam.

I never knew exactly what those black box warnings about suicidal ideations on antidepressants were all about until I took Viibryd. They came out of nowhere and were quite intense despite my not actually having any desire to kill myself whatsoever--completely irrational.

Without question the most horrific experience I've had with an antidepressant was vilazodone.
