Experienced Emsam users (or know one :)

Posted by floatingbridge on September 9, 2011, at 15:26:28

I will probably go back to 9mg patch again. After dropping back to 6mg for a week, doc agreed I wasn't so great.

HOWEVER: anxiety...

Could this abate at 12mg?

Anyone go higher? (pdoc mentioned this once, but am beginning to realize he often mentions things once.)

My therapist says starting from scratch on meds is the worst, and this, too, shall pass. At least in her clinical observations.

Amazing how deep and wide that edge really is at one's wits' end..... Could erect a new house here with room for a garden....

FB Just Robert David. He did well on 6mg. A lot of others in the original emsam trials didn't do so great the other is the guy that got completly well on an off label use med after it. Was suicidal at one time. Doing fine now. But when you say personal I have talked on phone with three of them one stayed on 12mg and did extremly well. Haven't spoken to her in awhile. Love Phillipa ps my pdoc had one lady on it but she got horrible rash dermatologist couldn't cure so she went off it at docs advise. So expensive so many couldn't afford it.

What about insomnia?

I don't know. Does insomnia every abate on maois?

Even before Emsam, I was unable to sleep. It was worsening before I tried Emsam initially in May.

They say not.

Insomnia aside, how good is the Emsam?

If it is pretty good (as far as you can tell, being sleep deprived) it might be worth it.

But this thread was about anxiety, wasn't it?

Is this anxiety a continuation of pre-Emsam anxiety (to the extent that you can disentangle symptoms from drug actions and withdrawals)?

You said Emsam 6mg was transparent. Well, it was once, before it was a withdrawal from 9mg.

Hmmmmmmm

Well, I think anxiety is the engine. Even for insomnia. It pre-existed Emsam by decades, hence the creeping Xanax usage of at least a decade.

So I brought up anxiety. You brought up insomnia. I think the two go together for me.

Years of anxiety can take a toll. Then I had that crazy forced Xanax withdrawal in July that I haven't recovered from yet. A lot of fear.

Would you like to comment on this?

When I wake it has either been with something of a jolt, or as if I had been dragged up to wakefulness by some endogenous stimulant. (Adrenaline? Cortisol?)

You may dimly remember as a child luxuriating in that end stage of sleep where you were peaceful, only a quarter awake, and still dreaming? I never get anything like that now. It is a distant memory.

What is Risperdal like for this? And as against Zyprexa as well, if you have any experience with that.

Sigi, I haven't gotten relief from that pull. I wish I could tell you I had. Your description is as apt. Jeez, I am getting weepy.

I am merely hoping to extend the length of time asleep.

I only imagine I would not escape the jerk of sudden-onset :-) wakefulness on Valium. I felt more dreamy on that upon awakening.

I'm sorry I cannot say more. Sleep was a haven.....

Any comment by you?

I am brought to mind the riddle of the sphinx from Oedipus tyrannous :-/

I like to watch my son sleep and wake. He laughs and smiles in his sleep.

Well, one pharmacist I spoke to mentioned low dose clonidine before bed, but I have not been enthusiastic because of reports (Scott, anyway said this) that it increases depression.

Clonodine? Is that a beta blocker? I have heard the name.

There is an alpha blocker called prazosin used for PTSD & sleep. No one here nor in real life has ever commented.

It's worse than sneezing. At least someone would say excuse me or god bless you.

So yours acts an a2 and mine on a1. Whatever that means, though wiki ties prazosin in with reducing NE which I think (maybe) is a problem for me.

I would think a try of one or the other seems harmless enough.

I guess from my perspective, what's one more day wakening to possible depression?

FB back up Emsam was good before going to 9mg and then backing up? So emsam was good at 6mg? And don't forget thyroid makes things harder to fix so to speak. Also hormones of other types. Phillipa

Phillipa, are you saying you think I was better at 6mg? I'm not sure exactly what you mean..... But would like to understand your input.

I was better at 6mg initially. But then was wrecked by withdrawing that and Xanax. Still trying to find my feet after this summer. I am hoping they are still there.

As far as AD effect, 9mg is the new 6mg. I am so hoping he takes it back up to 9mg again next week. F*ck sleep. It is so elusive and mysterious how it comes and goes.

It's pretty obvious I'm flailing.

Sigi, I might try asking again. I am not happy with tenazepam. It doesn't really help all that much and feels unhappy the next day. Or the prazosin I mentioned. I'll let you know.

Yes seemed to do well on 6mg then double whammy xanax and emsam at same time taken away. Maybe more time without adding or switches? I know easy to say and hard to do. And you are being pounded with info overload. I do it also. Donny now married also saw the pic of ex there also. Phillipa

It is quite possible that if your mood and energy increases significantly, anxiety and possibly insomnia would decrease. This is what happens to me. My anxiety and insomnia are like 'neurotic' - whirling negative depressing thoughts that leave me exhausted yet unable to fall asleep. If your anxiety and insomnia are more neurotic than physical then they could decrease from a significant therapeutic response to the Emsam.

Henryo, hi! How nice to see you.

Yes. I suppose you are right :-)

May I ask how are things going?
