Reaction to stimulants = bipolar?

Posted by sheilac on June 15, 2011, at 12:17:57

I have ADD and depending on the doc, mildly bipolar.

I am wondering if taking a stimulant (even in a low dose) for my ADD (Adderall XR) aggravates an underlying mood disorder?

Would a stimulant bring out bipolar?

Adderall XR in a tiny dose works great for my ADD, but it does cause some moodiness and irritability.

Is it just that I really am bipolar and have ADD?

I feel like this is the chicken and the egg thing.

I am now taking Lithium to keep my mood stable.

you could have both. how fun! because, yes, in some cases, stimulants bring on the bipolar sh*. But some bipolars do use a stimulant as long as it is with a stabilizer like your lamictal.

Yes, I definitely have both. I am now going to try a low dose of Lithium (trying to taper off Lithium) and a low dose of Trileptal in the evening along with some Klonopin.

I think those meds should curb any wear off effect I get from the Adderall.
