Agomelatine

Posted by viper1431 on June 3, 2011, at 10:39:31

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this stuff or heard much about it? My pdoc bought it up as a new one in Australia.
Seems a bit strange to me, it's taken once a day before bed and has a half life of less than 2 hours yet is suppose to work for depression.

I didn't know that about the half life being so short. I've read mixed reviews from another site. I guess the melatonin is the reason for bedtime dosing. Isn't this the one here in US that is just approved? Phillipa

It worked very well with me to begin with.

My experience was that the melatonin agonism became less robust over time than the 5ht2c antagonism, or at least that was my explanation for the fact that my sleep got worse (after getting better) whereas the dopaminergic type push is still around. Whether the dopaminergic push (which lasts all day....it must be a downstream effect so the 2 hour half life is of limited relevance) is good for sleep I have my doubts about. I've taken it in various doses for a couple of years. It's been good for me, overall. Given the available alternatives, I mean. Ask away.

I took it for around 5 months. I found it good for sleep but it did little to help my depression. Although I was on 50mg per night I did find it virtually side effect free.

Hi,

I have been on heavy stuff like amitriptyline and mirtazapine for almost 40 years.

I have tried agomelatine recently, but I only took this medicine for two or three nights.

This is a lightweight medicine that has almost no side effects. I need a more potent drug for sleep and anxiety.

Best regards,
Peter Heuer

Wellbutrin XL 150 mg
Remeron 45 mg
Lyrica 100 mg
Buspar 40 mg
Fluanxol 1 mg

I know this drug has been licensed to Novartis for the US market, but does anyone know when the FDA is supposed to give its approval letter? When it's supposed to hit pharmacies? (And yes, I mean information more up-to-date and specific than is available on Wikipedia. :-)

This AD shows promise.
