Tegretol anger

Posted by markwell on March 26, 2011, at 16:14:37

I have been diagnosed with bp disorder. I have been put on Tegretol as a mood stabilizer. I notice an increase in anger and irritability in the last few weeks. Isn't tegretol supposed to help with this? Anyone on tegretol have any experience with anger and irritability? Idon't know if it's the med or just life. I'd appreciate any insights.

Tegretol (carbamazepine) heps me a lot with anger, rejection sensitivity and frustration with or without 1 mg of clonazepam, taken at night.I take 300-400 mg of an extended release (Finlepsin Retard). If things go bad, i take an extra 200 mg in the mid morning.I noticed that if I raise the dose to say, 800 mg/day i notice some reversed effects.Whats your dosage?

I take a fairly low dose for borderline personality as a part of my illness.

Cheers

I'm at 200mgs 2x's per day which is my starting dose. So the tegretol helps you with anger? Did you have headaches when you first began? My problem is I have a very frustrating job that causes headaches and anger and I'm not sure if the tegretol has made things worse or its just the job and my illness. I've been on tegretol since 3/12/11 so very new to it. What was start-up dose like for you? Thanks for responding.

ya, I had increased agitation on Tegretol. I also paradoxically became very agitated on Topamax.

A quick search of a drug database reveals that Tegretol has been associated with agitation, depression and "talkativeness." It's not uncommon to find that a drug can cause a symptom that you would expect it to treat. You may have gotten a folded-up piece of paper called the 'label' with your prescription. If you didn't you should be able to obtain it from the pharmacist. It has a remarkable amount of information on it and can make good reading. A lot of the info is also duplicated on web sites like rxlist.com.

Disturbances of coordination, oculomotor disturbances, nystagmus, speech disturbances, abnormal involuntary movements, agitation, peripheral neuritis and paresthesias, depression, talkativeness, tinnitus, and hyperacusis may also occur.

That's the info verbatim from the database.

By the way, if you are already having anger and irritability on Tegretol, the Nuvigil may make it worse.

Why would it make it worse?

Here is another thread that should give you an idea of what Nuvigil is like. I have not taken it myself, only Provigil. But Provigil turned out to be a dud for me.
