B12 mystery-large amts get rid of ocd + anxiety?!

Posted by Smithy123 on February 10, 2011, at 16:23:33

My conditions: I have always suffered from ADD and mild symptoms of OCD and anxiety. I would have strange feelings to need to do something to make it "Just right" or if I don't do X, then Y will happen. I've also always been a perfectionist especially since I would make a lot of mistakes from my lack of attention. This all creates a lot of constant anxiety for no apparent reason. This and the fact that I have a hard time paying attention results in my having little interest in socializing.

I found out last July my b12 was slightly low via a blood test. I began getting b12 shots weekly back in July 2010 as well as taking b complex. After about 2-3 weeks or so of starting the shots and vitamin I noticed almost all of my typical induced-by-nothing type anxiety from obsessive symptoms and such had vanished! I could just DO things. No procrastinating. I felt in control and relaxed with who I was. I felt much more social. This feeling slowly decreased as it grew closer to 1 week since my last b12 shot. Then I would get another b12 shot and within 2-3 days I was back to feeling relaxed and ocd symptoms gone entirely! This went on for about 3 weeks or so. I think at some point I discontinued the b complex because I had figured it was the shots that were doing it.

After 3 weeks of this on and off lack of anxiety, things seemed to slowly return until b12 shots seemed to have no effect on my anxiety/ocd symptoms/perfectionism! I still continued my b12 shots but they seemed to do nothing!

Recently I started taking 4x3000mcg high absorption b12 pills per day and my anxiety/ocd syptoms greatly decreased- though not as much as I experience back in July 2010 with the b12 shots. I had also done this same thing-taking 4x3000mcg/day b12 in December 2010 with the same effects-reduction in anxiety though not as much as in July 2010. The reason I stopped in December was because my doctor wanted me to start abilify and with the b12 helping my anxiety it would be difficult to determine if abilify was helping.

Other notes: I have been taking 1000mg of omega 3/day (2:1 ratio DHA:EPA). I got my vitamin D checked and it was quite low. I have been prescribed 20,000 iu of D which I've been taking for a few months now. I haven't noticed any change in how I feel. I got my b12 checked a few months ago when the b12 shots were not helping my anxiety and I found out it was more than high enough.

What is going on here? I don't understand. I have taken loads of medications but b12 is the only thing that has done anything significant.

Thank you for sharing your story, I do not feel as alone now.
Who did the blood test and what were the levels?
I know of two older than me (40> years, both females) that also receive injections for similar reason. I would like to get my levels checked too - did you go to chiropractor or regular doctor?

When you said "I have always suffered from ADD and mild symptoms of OCD and anxiety. It felt exactly like my symptoms, well, at least for most part... I can sense that you're not aggresive, not too assertive, and these characteristics create major problems as I would rather be quiet and allow others to form wrong opinion of me rather than confront them.

It is good that you remind us of vitamin D and DHA/EPA (DHA is available is pure form from algae nowadays too, and one capsule has 800+ mg of DHA, while recommended daily dose is around 150 mg. With regular fish oil would you would need more than one capsule, of course you get the EPA with it, which is essential to our bodies.

As to your question, do you tnink it might have been placebo effect? Or perhaps there is a certain level of B12 that works - and anything bellow or above does not. Same principle works with medications too.

Thank you very much.

Yes, exactly. I can be fairly slow at times also which doesn't help in being assertive. Primarily I have a difficult time comprehending the information in social situations thus nothing to say or end up being stupid. So I lose interest. I've developed what feels like a rational form of social anxiety.

I seriously doubt it was a placebo effect. My parents forced me to go get these shots after I got a speeding ticket and told them I was kind of sleepy because I hadn't eaten in a while at the time. They had my b12 checked-it was a little low so I began getting shots...then one day I was just working and realized hey where is that random anxiety?! Whoa sweet! I wasn't expecting anything really.

I would add the complex back into the mix. People say that b vitamins work better in tandem than alone.

Why do you suggest Deplin? My doctor had me taking it for 2 weeks but it did nothing. (1 pill/day)

Also, I have found 4-5xsublingual 5000mcg b12 provide quite a bit of relief of anxiety and ocd syptoms (though not as much as the shots did). Would it be better to take 2-3 of these twice a day or 4-5 at once? If I'm taking an odd total such as 5 where I'm taking 3 in the morning and 2 in the evening or vice versa, when should I take the larger dose? Morning or evening? I am primarily awake during the day of course. I appreciate everyone's help?

You sound like me. Since you have troube socialising and ocd you probably have asperger's not ADD. I have figured that the reason why we can't focus has to do with socialising. I got all A's in college on no medicine. The thing is we pay attention to everything we are not facing with our ears (to socialise you have to pay attention to what you are facing with your ears). And then we pay attention only to what we are facing with our eyes (normal people look around with their eyes more). So our ears take care of one thing and our eyes the other (other people do both with their ears and their eyes). The thing is though we hear what is around us better, and see what we are facing better then the average person. (I also noticed we don't look at people's noses or chins much, because that would require moving one's eyes too basically). Then with the OCD, i realised that if you payy attention to the thing you are having OCD with (light switches on and off for example) with your eyes and touch, you can turn the light off just once. Also, we only do this with things like lights, caps on milk/juice, and locks, because we think if they are not all the way they will do things like cause a fire, make the juice go bad, or make it so people can get in the house. But actually none of that will happen because the light switches and everything were designed that way quite luckily for us. As for the Abilify, I was on it and it made me have thoughts like: I'm going to molest kids, kill people, have guys suck my dick, have sex with my mom, even kill and eat people. So I got off of that, and all those thoughts went away. So if you notice thoughts like that definitely get off of it. The thoughts are very annoying.
