Is the endo the one to ask?

Posted by Maxime on September 7, 2010, at 11:07:39

I see my endo tomorrow regarding my thyroid.

Some weird things are happening to my body and I was just wondering if she is the person to ask.

Well, there is whole weight gain thing on a very low cal diet.

And I haven't had my period since December. I used to have to shave under my arms and my legs. But lately I only have to it once a month. It's very odd. Does this mean that I don't have enough Testerone? Is that why I am so tired all the time?

My GP did some tests on me and she said that I was not entering menopause, but that was all she could tell me.

Thanks. Phillipa, I am hoping you will respond because I know you are familiar with hormones etc.

Oh boy Maxie this is such a hard one as still battling this myself. Did your endo do an FSH test? as from 30-50 means menopause but shorter or longer cycles signal peri-menopause and this can occur for years before actual menopause which I never knew. I was one of the lucky ones who just had 28 day cyles and lasted 5 days. But all of a sudden for me first in early 40's night sweats once in a while which went away and only returned late 40's and cycles closer together and shorter. Some have the opposite heavy but each woman is different. High testosterone should mean more hair in females. As was told if my bioidenticals testosterone too high I'd get facial hair. Most females entering or even 30's today estrogen starts to drop. I had to find an antiaging doc who tested estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. Now the ideal situation to start them before or at the beginning of menopause to avoid thinning of bones and all the lovely things that go along with menopause. And you might remember this is when all my problems started thyroid went, and the anxiety was totally out of control. So should you ask you endo yes but seems mainstream endos don't pay much attention. I recently asked my bioidentical anti aging doctor as was an ob gyn if saliva testing was better than blood. He said that he tried saliva and didn't get good results that for him blood was better. Maxie I don't know what to think of antiaging but watching my neighbor who was entering menopause whos own ob gyn did hormone testing respond to bioidenticals was amazing. As she started at the beginning uses the spray for estrogen evimist and promethium for progesterone which is a pill to take at night and testosterone cream. Well she was able to go off ad's and cut drastically down on xanax which she's been on for years and she seems like a new woman. Might google Stanleys compounding RX in Charlotte NC as they have a good description of the bioidenticals and babble me with other stuff. The original studies were done on the synthetic hormones which is basically horse pee. And that's where hormones got a bad rap with all sorts of side effects. Now they the bios are being reevaluated. I was told that hyster sisters is also a good website for younger women with hormone questions. I guess you can tell that I'm pretty confused by this issue also. Google Ronald L Brown MD charlotte also he has a website on this issue. Phillipa

Thanks! I knew you would have some answers. Other the lack of mense, I no other signs of menopause or peri menopause. The lack of mense could be from my meds. Who knows what they do to then endocrine system!!!

And in all seriousness you are not too thin as menses stop when too thin to support a pregnancy. Hope this will at least get you looking. Let me know how your thyroid is as l-2 is supposed to be ideal for TSH but mine is l.5 and feel miserable. They are saying that a combo of T3 & T4 helps many people feel better. There is some thyroid med out that is a combo of both and not the fast release of single T3 is. Mary Shoman's site is the thyroid site Phillipa

I take Cytomel AND Synthroid. It took me a a while to convince her to let me try it, but she did eventually.

I have my appt. in 2 hours ... must run!

Hi Phillipa and Maxie,

I'm revisiting the thyroid issue too. You both have hashimoto's, right?

I take levoxyl and now want to try a slow release t3. Or thylor (sp?).

On top of menopause (I'm the right age), I really really suspect the hashimoto's is

inadequately treated, even though tsh was .96 on last test.

Besides fatigue, fatigue, fatigue, I now have carpal tunnel (!)

Maxie, tell us what endo says. I need to find one myself.

Phillipa, you're right. I know another woman who went absolutely haywire at 45 onward. Fatigue, extreme panic attacks, high energy episodes, dysthymia. Went to endo, got the 'wiley protocol' and almost had a nervous breakdown. Oh. Someone checked her thyroid antibodies. Through the roof! She

figured she went hypo after the birth of her son. Her hashimoto's progressed unchecked until he was almost 8. Wish I could pass on a treatment success. Her tsh is good, but dysthymia and fatigue, aches remain.

Arrrgh.

(Btw, no claims made here that thyroid disfunction is the root cause of mental illness. Above based on my personal situation and experience :) )

Hi you where you been hiding. Seriously so many psych patients have messed up thyroids. Used to check all the charts as charge RN. Anyway isn't there a combo of both T3 & T4? I tried the cytomel and only lasts a few hours. You can get compounded combos I do know that. The Wiley protocol supposedly she's some sociologist not even a doc. Quoted in Suzanne Somers book and also google her. Lots of stuff. So I also don't feel right on the synthroid you have a generic version of it but just T4 like me. Love Phillipa

Yes, I have Hashimotos. My appt didn't go very well. I feel like she wasn't listening to me. For instance, I told her that I hadn't had my period since December and she said "it's hormones". Then I told her about the hair not growing anymore on my legs or under my arms and then I got the same same answer ... it's hormones. Well no sh*t Sherlock! Do you think we should test to see which ones? Sigh. I told her about feeling tired and sore all the time and she said ... it's your depression. ARGH!!!! I was not a happy camper by the end of the appt.

Have you ever read Charlotte's Web? When Wilbur explains how something good not be less then zero?

Well sounds like your visit was. You got nothing and she took energy to see and endure. I'd be right p*ssed. Sorry. Maxime :(
