Zyprexa vs Saphris

Posted by Bob12 on August 14, 2010, at 11:26:57

Has anyone had any experience with Saphris? How does it compare to Zyprexa? How does it compare to Abilify?
Is it possible to take both Saphris and Zyprexa at the same time before I consider a cross taper and reduce the Zyprexa?

thanks

All the info I could find on asenapine (saphris) indicates that it isn't so much a *better* option than the other atypicals; its just another option amongst the atypicals.

The weight gain is apparently minimal, although time will tell with that one. In terms of EPS, they're saying its good stuff, but the studies compared it to Haldol, so anything will come out looking good, really.

What's the problem(s) with your zyprexa? Why are you so eager to switch over?

The problem I have with zyprexa is that it makes me tired during the day, and I still suffer from anxiety and OCD

Hey. Saphris caused some drop-outs b/c of sedation. Overall, lots of people apparently dropped out in the trial...I'm too lazy to go back and get references, but if you google asenapine you'll see some bloggers' comments on the studies. Some of them are quite harsh.

Have you tried a more thoroughly researched atypical, like Geodon or Abilify? Have you considered co-medication? I read one study where they switched people from zyprexa to perphenazine plus BuSpar (yeah, I thought it was weird, too). Anyway, the results were good. They were more careful with the perphenazine dose than docs probably are with atypical doses, so EPS was minimal (and buspar helps with EPS, too). I just thought I'd throw that one out there to show that you have all kinds of options, as long as you and your doc keep tabs on current research and theory.

Good luck!

I found the abstract:

Tiny study but very interesting; one patient lost 20kg!

Thanks for this info.

I wonder if the best idea is to try adding Buspar to my Zyprexa. My main problems are anxiety and OCD, so perhaps Buspar is worth a try,
I also take valium 2 mg every night, and 0.5 mg ativan as needed.
Buspar might be better than taking ativan.

thanks
