Abilify as mood stabilizer?!

Posted by ben on December 27, 2009, at 1:26:02

I am on a TCA and Lithium for bipolar (II) depression. We tried several ADs and combinations without real success. Now my pdoc added Abilify as a second mood stabilizer to Lithium. When does Abilify kick in and how much (dose range) is needed as mood stabilizer. In the prescribing information 15mg/d is the max. dose as adjunct to ADs. My pdoc says he has patients who need up to 30mg/d. What are your experiences?

Dosing (Adults):
Bipolar disorder (acute manic or mixed episodes): Stabilization: Oral: 30 mg once daily; may require a decrease to 15 mg based on tolerability (15% of patients had dose decreased); safety of doses >30 mg/day has not been evaluated. Maintenance: Continue stabilization dose for up to 6 weeks; efficacy of continued treatment >6 weeks has not been established.

Schizophrenia: Oral: 10-15 mg once daily; may be increased to a maximum of 30 mg once daily (efficacy at dosages above 10-15 mg has not been shown to be increased). Dosage titration should not be more frequent than every 2 weeks.

Supplied: 5 mg, 10 mg, 15 mg, 20 mg, 30 mg tab. 1 mg/ml (150 ml) oral soln.

Abilify,if it does work for you, will usualy offer a light mood elevation, for example im sensative to meds and picky,i did not like it,but my friend has been stable on it for 5 years, good luck.

Antipsychotics only work for me for about 2 months before pooping out. However, before that, it worked for me within a couple of days for depression. It gave me lots of energy. It didn't stabilize my mood, though, as I had a mixed episode after being on it for a couple weeks. I started with 5 mg and increased to 10mg before stopped after it pooped out. I hope that helps.
